Fun for all the family as carnival returns
This Saturday (14 June) sees Woodley Carnival returning to Woodford Park.
More than 6,000 people attend annually, with tickets priced at £5 for daytime only or £13 for combined afternoon and evening entry.
The afternoon hosts lots of stalls, performances, displays and free attractions. Local bands will then take to the stage for the evening concert - partying the night away until a stunning firework finale.
We expect car parks around Woodley to be busier than normal, so walk or cycle if you can.
Hot weather alert in place this weekend
The UK Health Security Agency has issued a yellow heat-health warning for the region, including Wokingham Borough.
High temperatures are expected until 8am on Sunday 15 June.
Vulnerable groups may need extra support, including older people, people with young children, health conditions and anyone who works outside should take care.
Check on vulnerable neighbours and family members during this time. Follow the NHS hot weather advice to keep safe.
 Celebrating new citizens
Before handing over his mayoral duties, Cllr Adrian Mather welcomed 29 new residents to the borough at a citizenship ceremony last month.
Held at Wokingham Town Hall, Cllr Mather handed out gifts, while Deputy Lieutenant, Lt Col Sir Alexander Matheson presented the new residents with certificates.
Among the 29 new citizens, were people from all over the world, including Australia, Brazil, India, Portugal and Ukraine.
During his year in office, Cllr Mather welcomed around 350 new residents to the borough. Cllr Carol Jewell, will now be taking on this role after she as appointed as Borough Mayor at Annual Council.
The citizenship ceremony is the final step to becoming a British citizen and formally welcomes a person into their local community.
Group ceremonies are held monthly and are free of charge, with each person bringing a guest.
Listening to your feedback on new road scheme
Our major new roads team, and our partners at Balfour Beatty, attended a recent drop-in meeting to talk to you about the South Wokingham Distributor Road.
We heard some suggestions about how we could improve our communications on the project, and we’ve taken these on board.
We've started a comprehensive overhaul of our web pages about the project, and will continue to update them as things move forward.
We're also working on a detailed timeline that pulls together all the impacts of construction in one place, including all road closures, and we'll share this as soon as we can.
We know lots of people are affected by the ongoing footpath closures and are still looking at all options, but we haven’t yet identified a way to reopen them safely.
For regular, detailed updates on this project, please consider subscribing to our South Wokingham community newsletter.
Play a climate game at Wokingham Libary
Head to Wokingham Library for interactive climate and nature games this Saturday (14 June).
We’ve partnered with not-for-profit Climate Fresk to host its Nature Game and Climate Game sessions in the library at Carnival Hub, from 12.45pm to 3.45pm.
The climate game explores the science of climate change, while the nature game focuses on biodiversity and ecosystem connections. Both games are equally engaging and suitable for beginners and experts alike.
These are collaborative experiences, with 42 game cards, which you'll arrange to reveal cause-and-effect relationships.
It gives you a chance to create your very own visual representation of environmental systems.
This is a free event, but places are limited, so book your spot. No prior knowledge is needed. This is part of a wider set of events for Reading Climate Festival, which runs from 7 to 21 June.
