New stores come to Wokingham town centre
A new bubble tea store has opened in Wokingham and a new childrenswear store is also on its way.
Mooboo Bubble Tea has opened in Denmark Street, with a grand opening with special offers next weekend (6 to 8 September). It has more than 20 stores across the south, having been founded in London in 2012.
Baby and childrenswear independent Pops and Flo has also announced it will be coming to Denmark Street later this autumn. They offer a range of clothing for babies and children, from newborns to six years old.
Winter Fuel Payments and Pension Credit
The Government has announced changes to Winter Fuel Payments, which will come into place for this winter (2024/25).
The tax-free payment had been made to all pensioners to help with winter energy bills but will be now only be for people who were born before 23 September 1958 and get one of the following:
- Pension Credit
- Universal Credit
- income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income Support
You’ll get a letter in October or November telling you how much Winter Fuel Payment you’ll get, if you’re eligible.
Check your Pension Credit eligibility
You may be eligible for Pension Credit but not be claiming it. Checking if you meet the criteria could mean you can get Winter Fuel Payments this year.
Even if you have modest savings, a retirement income or own your home, you could still get Pension Credit. Check your eligibility online.
Remember to check our cost of living help hub for other support with the higher cost of living.

Join speedway enthusiasts for their annual reunion
A celebration of British speedway is coming to California Country Park in Finchampstead.
Friends of Speedway is holding its 18th California-in-England Speedway Reunion on 8 September from 11am to 4pm. An information board was erected prior to last year's reunion, celebrating the history of speedway at California Country Park.
From the 1930s to the 1950s, the park was home to a speedway track.
You are encouraged to bring along any speedway memorabilia, whether it is vintage programmes, rare photographs or cherished souvenirs. Share your treasures with fellow enthusiasts and relive history together at this annual celebration.
At the reunion, you will find a stunning line-up of speedway bikes and the old speedway track, with the original concrete starting grid.
