New ANPR cameras switch on next week
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will be switched on next week to improve road safety and reduce congestion.
The cameras are in 11 locations and will enable us to issue penalty charge notices (PCNs) to drivers who commit moving traffic offences such as making banned right turns, driving the wrong way on a one way street and ignoring weight restrictions.
This will improve our roads by:
- Improving road safety including for those walking, cycling, and wheeling
- Reducing traffic congestion and improving traffic flow
- Shortening journey times for public transport services
- Reducing vehicle emissions which improves air quality
- Enabling the police to focus their policing priorities elsewhere
- Providing economic benefits by reducing road traffic accidents
For the first six months, registered keepers will receive a warning for their first offence.
After six months, the vehicle’s registered keeper will receive a PCN within 28 days of the offence. They will have 28 days to pay the penalty charge. If the charge is paid within 21 days, a 50 per cent discount will be applied. If they wish to appeal, this can be done online or through the post.
Winter is on its way – how you can prepare
Our Household Support Fund is still open for grant applications from any resident.
You can get £100 to help with essentials and the current round closes at the end of September. Get ready for winter and get your applications in now. You will still be available to get financial support between October and March if you get support now.
You can apply through Citizens Advice Wokingham or Age UK Berkshire to access funding to pay for food, energy bills or other costs.
There's also specific support for means-tested free school meal children from First Days Children's Charity. Our other cost of living pages set out options for help if you’re struggling:
And if you want to help spread the word about cost of living support available for others – check out our cost of living help toolkit, including easily shareable messages for WhatsApp.
Have your say - review of our constitution
Residents are being asked to give their views we undertake a review of our constitution.
The constitution sets out how we operate and make decisions, as well as the procedures that are followed and ensuring we're run in an efficient, transparent and accountable way.
We've launched a public consultation on our Engage Wokingham Borough platform, which will run for four weeks and closes on Thursday 12 October.
This short survey asks how easy you feel it is to influence our decisions and hold us to account.
Volunteer fair in Wokingham tomorrow
Don’t forget tomorrow (Saturday) is the Wokingham Volunteer Fair. It runs from 10am to 1pm at Wokingham Town Hall (RG40 1AS).
It’s perfect if you have a few hours spare per week, if your children are starting nursery, school and university or you’re recently retired.
Volunteering is a fantastic way to give something back to the local community and help others.
The event, organised by Wokingham Volunteer Centre, is free to attend and there is no need to book, so please just turn up and hear from local organisations you could support.
If you can’t make it, you can find out more about volunteering opportunities on the Wokingham Volunteer Centre website, call 0118 977 0749 or email volunteer@wok-vol.org.uk
Keep up with the latest in your community
Did you know there’s some handy pages on our website to help residents become part of local, digital communities based on where you are or what you’re interested in.
