Paddle, run and have fun by taking part in SUPathlon
We are joining forces with Barnes Fitness to bring you the Dinton SUPathlon on Sunday 24 September at Dinton Pastures Country Park.
The event is a combination of 1km stand-up paddleboarding on Black Swan Lake and a 5km run around the country park. You can enter as an individual to complete both by yourself, or as a team of two with each person doing one part.
Stand-up paddleboards are available for hire, but you need to have previous experience in the sport when entering.
The minimum age to enter is 15 and prices range from £30 for an individual with a board, to £50 for a team of two needing to rent a board. If you are interested in taking part, sign up online before 12 noon on Friday 22 September.
All the fun of the fair at Spencers Wood Carnival
There is free entry to the annual Spencers Wood Carnival, which is being held this Saturday (16 September).
Families are invited to come along to the recreation ground on Clares Green Road from 12 noon to enjoy a range of activities.
Attractions include fairground rides, a dog show, circus skills, live music and stalls run by local organisations. There will be a licensed bar, as well as hot and cold food and drinks available to purchase.
The carnival was first held in 2007 and is designed to build community spirit. Any profits made are shared between the participating organisations.
Successful author will share memories of her novels
Come and meet award-winning author Claire Fuller at Wokingham Library on Tuesday 3 October.
Claire, the author of five novels, will be talking about her books and career as a writer from 10.30am to 11.30am.
Her latest book, The Memory of Animals was published in April, and the previous novel Unsettled Ground won the Costa Novel Award 2021 and was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction.
Her books have been translated into more than 20 languages and Claire also writes flash fiction and short stories. Many have been published, and she has won the BBC Opening Lines short story competition and the Pin Drop Short Story Award.
Claire's books will be available for purchase on the day. This is a free talk but places must be reserved in advance.
Free job fair to help everyone thrive in the workplace
You can meet prospective employers from a variety of sectors and receive carer support all under one rood at a free job fair on Tuesday 26 September.
We are organising the event, which is being held at Wokingham Town Hall, jointly with the Department for Work and Pensions, from 10am to 2pm.
Anyone wishing to attend can just turn up on the day, with no advance booking needed.
Residents can browse roles in construction, transport, health, care and public administration sectors and some apprenticeships or training programmes will also be offered. Most of the jobs are with local companies and organisations, and do not require extensive travel.
Celebrating Green Libraries Week with themed events
This year, National Libraries Week is becoming Green Libraries Week! From 2 to 8 October, libraries across the UK are celebrating initiatives focused on sustainability and the climate emergency.
Selected libraries are holding green-themed storytimes, so join us for stories about looking after our planet, recycling, weather and climate change:
- Lower Earley Library, 10am to 10.30am, Tuesday 3 October (Places must be booked)
- Wokingham Library, 4pm to 4.30pm, Tuesday 3 October (Drop-in session)
- Finchampstead Library, 9.45am to 10.15am, Friday 6 October (Drop-in session)
Libraries will also feature displays of books to follow the environmental theme. Our teams in Wokingham, Woodley and Lower Earley will also be sharing information about climate stripes and displaying a frame donated by Cllr Sarah Kerr, executive member for climate emergency and resident services, which shows about how temperatures have risen from 1863 to 2002.
Heritage celebration offers valuable dementia insights
A Wokingham charity is hosting an event to help celebrate Black History Month and raise awareness for the work it does.
Younger People With Dementia hopes the event, which is being held at Palmer Park in Reading on Monday 9 October, will be an enlightening insight into young onset dementia within the ethically diverse community.
Join the charity at Tutu's Ethiopian Table from 2pm to 5pm to enjoy captivating speakers, cultural entertainment, food and refreshments.
