Congratulations to students getting results
Congratulations to all students who collected their A Level, BTEC and other results in the borough yesterday (Thursday).
These young people have spent more than two years working through the challenges that the pandemic caused in education.
In the face of this, students have shown remarkable resilience and determination, balancing their learning and emotional wellbeing despite missing out on important time spent with their friends and families.
We’re extraordinarily proud of everyone picking up their results this week and would like to wish them luck as they take their next steps in life.
If you know anyone needing advice or support, they can talk to our Elevate team about options or visit our emotional and mental health support pages for children and young people.
Diversity and inclusion at the heart of story hours
A nationally acclaimed drag performer is giving free interactive storytellings next week.
Drag Queen Story Hour UK aims to promote diversity and acceptance, as well as encouraging more families to attend their local library.
These free sessions are running on Wednesday 24 August for families with children aged four and over at Wokingham Library (11am), Woodley Library (1pm) and Lower Earley Library (3pm).
Places must be booked at the appropriate branch and attendees must have a valid library card when bookings are made.
Wokingham Borough is the penultimate stop on the company’s ‘100 Libraries in 100 Days’ summer tour, which has already seen visits to Reading, Oxfordshire, Bristol and Cardiff.
Giving horses and riders confidence with new facility
Horse riders have a chance to prepare for some eye-catching road improvements which we’re planning to carry out in Finchampstead.
We’ve worked with our partners and the nearby Wheatlands Farm livery yard to install a training panel that will help horses get used to our proposed new markings and improved road layout at California Crossroads.
The junction, consisting of two mini-roundabouts with five crossings, is set to be decorated with leaf-shaped designs in various colours as part of a scheme to slow traffic down and make it look nicer.
However, during public consultations, the riding community told us that an unfamiliar surface could make their horses nervous.
We took their concerns seriously and are pleased to say that the new panel will allow them to have as much off-road training as they need before encountering the real thing. It’s proven popular since we installed it in June and we’ve been thanked for our efforts.
There’s no charge to use it, but bookings must be made in advance so that enough time can be allocated for every user. Anyone who is interested should email Wheatlands Farm.
Send in your sunflower pictures 🌻
We’re asking you to send in your sunflower pictures as part of marking Ukraine Independence Day on 24 August.
These are for us to share with the community to mark the occasion as the sunflower is the country’s national flower and symbol of hope for the future.
The date also marks six months since Russia’s invasion and 31 years since the country declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.
We will be using the pictures to showcase support to Ukraine locally, as well as looking to tell local stories of Ukrainians who have come to the area.
