Last chance to join summer teen sailing courses
The summer holidays are going to end in about two weeks. But there’s still time for your teen to learn something new.
At Dinton Pastures Country Park, a new Teen Sailing Week Level 1 course will start next Monday (22 Aug), followed by a new Level 2 course in the week after (30 August). Both courses are suitable for ages 13 to 17.
In the Level 1 course, participants will learn the basics of sailing, while the Level 2 course is designed for advancing sailing skills and knowledge. The two courses help youngsters work towards the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) National Sailing Scheme.
Teen sailing courses at Dinton Pastures are very popular. Book a place for your teen before they are full.
Barbecue party at California Country Park’s café
Let’s have some summer family fun at California Country Park, near Finchampstead, this weekend.
Jackson's Café by the lake of the country park will hold a BBQ from 4 to 7pm on its terrace this Saturday (20 August). In addition to food, a face painting artist will be present until 6pm to add more colours to the party and live music by The Human Jukebox will be on until 7:30pm.
A full bar with draught larger, wines & spirits will be available. The café’s cocktail connoisseur will stand by to whip up something tasty for all who fancy a drink.
The Jackson family has been running the café in California Country Park for eight years. The café specialises in fresh, locally sourced produce. It has recently undergone a major refurbishment and was re-opened this April with a fresh look.
There's a large dog-friendly outdoor seating area, though please be aware that dogs aren't allowed inside.

You can also pay extra (£4 per person) to join the preview party to enjoy live music from 6:45pm until the film starts.

Be a Hedgehog Champion
Hedgehogs are an indicator species. The habits of hedgehogs reflect the health of the environment and nature as a whole.
Unfortunately, hedgehogs in the UK have undergone a long historic decline. A third have been lost in urban areas since the millennium, according to a report by The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) and People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES).
Launched in 2011, the ‘Hedgehog Street’ campaign aims to reverse the decline by encouraging people to become ‘Hedgehog Champions’ and add hedgehog-friendly features to their gardens, which are good habitats for hedgehogs.
Over 100,000 people have become ‘Hedgehog Champions’ so far. You can join them to help hedgehogs on the Hedgehog Street website. The website also provides lots of information about hedgehogs and what can be done to encourage hedgehogs in your garden and neighbourhood.
Dinton Activity Centre up for key industry awards
Dinton Activity Centre has received two nominations at the Offsite Awards 2022, a key industry award celebrating all aspects of offsite building process.
The activity centre was officially opened last September, with 75 per cent of the build completed offsite by Reds10, a leader in modular building construction. Offsite building significantly reduced carbon emissions during the construction of the centre.
Reds10, which also worked with us on other projects like the expansion of Addington School in Woodley, has put Dinton Activity Centre forward for two categories of the Offsite Awards, namely the ‘Best Use of Volumetric Technology’ and the ‘Commercial Project of the Year’.
Results will be announced on 20 September during an awards ceremony in Coventry.
Earlier, the council was named ‘Client of the Year’ at the Constructing Excellence Awards for a number of projects undertaken by Reds10, one of which is the Dinton Activity Centre.
