How our Covid response team are now welcoming Ukrainian refugees
This is Lisa and Chris, they were part of our Covid response team but are now helping people in the borough in a new way. They’ve spent the last six weeks welcoming almost 200 Ukrainian refugees into the borough including nearly 100 children.
Although you can’t be involved day to day in helping these young people like Lisa and Chris, we know many want to do something to welcome them.
We’re coordinating community fundraising to help pay for school essentials like laptops and smartphones for these children who have fled war-torn Ukraine. It will also pay for them to join sports clubs, social organisations (scouts or guides) or cultural groups like drama or music.
More than £7,500 has already been pledged but if we don’t reach the £25,000 target, the funding won’t be made available. Donate using the button below.
Charities and Covid heroes championed by Mayor
Representatives from more than 35 voluntary groups, as well as some of the borough’s Covid-19 Roll of Honour heroes, came together on Sunday (15 May) for a special reception hosted by the Borough Mayor, Cllr Keith Baker MBE.
The event was held at the Oakwood Centre in Woodley to thank all of those who volunteered during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Around 140 people attended the reception, where they were celebrated for going above and beyond to help the borough’s community during the pandemic. Read the full story on our website.
Get vaccinated at Wokingham Library
Don’t forget you can still get your Covid-19 vaccine at Wokingham Library. The centre is open Fridays, Saturday and Sundays during May, offering first, second and booster doses of the vaccine to all eligible age groups.
Over 75s and people with a weakened immunity can also come for their Spring booster at this venue. Please check the opening hours and vaccine availability as this varies by day.
It’s worth booking in advance to avoid disappointment. Or you can turn-up on the day. Please bring your NHS number if you have it and a face covering. More information is available on our website.
