Storm Eunice warning ahead of 60mph+ winds
The Met Office has an amber weather warning in place across the south today (Friday) until 9pm tonight due to extremely strong winds. These could go above 60mph locally.
An amber warning means that flying debris, road closures, delays to public transport, fallen trees and power cuts are likely. Ensure any garden furniture or items stored outside are moved inside or secured. You can read advice on staying safe in a storm on the Met Office website.
All waste collections are going ahead as normal. Ensure your recycling bags are tightly sealed when you put them out. Please get your bags, caddies and garden waste bins in quickly if you’re at home and are able to do so.
You can keep an eye on the Met Office weather warnings for more information. Any information on powercuts can be found on the SSEN website. Repairs to council houses can be reported by phone using the numbers on our webpages.
Our teams are on standby to help with urgent issues. Report an issue with a tree or report an issue with a blocked road on our website. If it’s urgent, which would mean it is very likely to present an imminent threat to life or serious injury or serious damage to property, call 0118 974 6000 and select the 'highways' option 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
We’ve also activated our Severe Weather Emergency Protocol. If you are homeless, or are aware of someone sleeping rough, emergency beds are available during this cold weather. Contact us on our free support line 0118 974 6000 (during office hours) or 0800 212 111 (outside of office hours).
If issues happen outside normal working hours (9am to 5pm) call 0800 212 111 out of hours - Monday to Friday 5pm to 9am, weekend days and public holiday. Only call this number If there is a danger to life, property or major disruption, it’s not for updates or reporting issues again.
Storm delays opening of new vaccine centre
We’re excited to announce that a new walk-in Covid-19 vaccination centre is opening at the Wokingham Library, to help make access to the vaccine easier for residents.
It was due to open on Friday (18 February), however because of the severe weather warning Oxford Health has made the decision to close all mass vaccination centres and pop up clinics tomorrow, including this one.
We will post any further updates on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Here’s what you need to know about the new centre:
- The site will open from 2pm to 7pm on Fridays and 11am to 4.45pm on Saturdays and Sundays, with nearby parking at Denmark Street car park and across the town
- First, second and booster doses of the Pfizer vaccine are available to all eligible people over the age of 12, including pregnant women
- People can be vaccinated regardless of whether they have proof of address, a GP or NHS number, or indefinite leave to remain in the UK – simply turn up with no appointment necessary
A review of the site will take place after six weeks, so we’re encouraging residents to make good use of the facility. The best way to tackle Covid is increased vaccination and we encourage everyone who is eligible to come forward for it.
If you tested positive in December and were unable to get your booster, it’s now time to come forward for it (28 days from when you tested positive). Parents, carers and guardians are also encouraged to bring children and young people over the age of 12 to this new site over half term if they have decided to have them vaccinated.
Last chance to have your say on Woodley cycleway
We’re into the final few days for you to have your say on the second consultation on the Woodley to Reading cycleway. We’ve had hundreds of responses already but there’s still time to give your views.
This consultation, which closes on Monday (21 February) will help us make the decision about whether to progress the project. Some of the proposed changes include:
- A two-way stepped cycle track to segregate cyclists from vehicles and pedestrians along Woodlands Avenue, Church Road and Culver Lane
- On-carriageway cycling on Palmerstone Road or Anderson Avenue due to low traffic flows and speeds
- Speed limit reduction to 20mph along Woodlands Avenue, Palmerstone Road and Anderson Avenue
- One-way (westbound) system for motor vehicles between Howth Drive and Lytham Road to reduce through traffic for Woodlands Avenue east and enable the introduction of cycle track whilst maintaining existing footway widths and green verges
- Localised widened passing places on the one-way section to facilitate passing of delivery/servicing vehicles
We’re aiming to provide a transport system that connects people and places and supports a sustainable, inclusive and striving towards being a carbon neutral borough. You can respond using the button below.
 Rise in distraction thefts
We’re asking residents to look out for more vulnerable people in the community following a rise in distraction thefts.
Alerts have recently been issued by Thames Valley Police about incidents in the Woodley area. In these cases, the offenders have been targeting vulnerable and elderly people and using distraction techniques to obtain their bank cards once they have entered their PIN.
These criminals often work in groups, with someone watching the victim as they input their PIN, while another distracts them. It is important to be aware of your surroundings when you are using a cash machine, or in a supermarket car park.
If you see or suspect a crime is taking place, call the police on 999.
