'Welcome to Portsmouth' is a document to support education professionals who work with children and families in the city. Whether you are new to the city or have been working with children and families for a while, we hope that you will find it useful.
We recognise that navigating everything there is to know about safeguarding and supporting vulnerable children and families can be challenging, especially in an ever evolving and changing workforce. We have therefore developed this guide to help support you in your new or existing role.

Portsmouth SEND Local Offer Live returns to support families |

Families who have children and young people up to the age of 25 years old with special educational needs and/or disabilities in the city are invited to attend Local Offer Live on Tuesday 1 October 2024 from 2pm - 6.30pm at the John Pounds Centre.
Please share this information with parents/carers as they will have a chance to meet a range of exhibitors who can provide resources and information on services available locally. They may also be able to make referrals to relevant organisations.
Attendees can watch short presentations on neurodiversity, Dynamite (young person's SEND group) and from other organisations too.

Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) training course 2024/25 |

The Educational Psychology Team are once again hosting an ELSA training course over six separate days starting in November 2024. The course is primarily for teaching assistants and learning mentors who wish to support children and young people in all aspects of emotional literacy.
Topics covered will be building relationships, social and friendship skills, self-esteem, emotional regulation, anxiety, neurodiversity, loss and bereavement and emotional wellbeing. Trainee ELSAs will also learn specific techniques such as active listening and writing social stories.
The training will be held at The Training & Learning Centre, The Portsmouth Academy, St Marys Road, Portsmouth over six days (all Wednesdays) - 27 November 2024, 15 January 2025, 26 February 2025, 26 March 2025, 30 April 2025 and 25 June 2025.
The cost is £575 per delegate. Please note there is also an ongoing commitment to attend supervision sessions following training to maintain the ELSA status. Details of the ELSA role and upcoming training can be found here.

Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association training programme 2024-25 |

Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association provides a variety of training for teachers, portage staff and those working in education. All parents and professionals working with a child with Down syndrome are welcome to attend at no charge. Training is delivered by qualified experts with specialism in Down syndrome.

We know that it can be tough to support a young person with a mental health difficulty, and to know what to do to help them. To help make this easier for you, we want to share useful resources that Hampshire CAMHS have co-produced with parents and carers.

The Good Mental Health Handbook: a guide which describes the difficulties that young people might be experiencing and provides top tips to help you manage these difficulties together as a family.

Recipes 4 Wellbeing: useful cards to help you support a young person experiencing difficulties with their mental wellbeing. These easy-to-read guides provide help and advice, and what to look out for based on the difficulty the young person is experiencing.
Along with these useful resources, it is also important to share the guidance which describes where, how and when to access local support in Portsmouth for children and young people's mental health issues.

White Ribbon UK is the UK’s leading charity engaging with men and boys to end men’s violence against women and girls (VAWG).
‘Building Gender Equality for Young People' is a learning resource that has been created to enable education settings to positively engage with their students to challenge gender stereotypes, learn about building healthy relationships and promoting equality.
It explores the issues through child-centred, and age appropriate, practical learning experiences and supports young people to recognise the impact of gendered norms on their everyday lived experience.

We are delighted to share the first draft of our citywide STEM offer for 2024/25, which includes a range of training, opportunities and experiences for children, staff and the wider community.
We will continue to share sign up links and other CPD opportunities through our network channels throughout the year and always welcome requests to make this even more bespoke for our city.
As a reminder for our Silver and Gold schools, the last date to sign up for the following is Friday 6 September 2024, which is when any remaining spaces will be offered to any other schools:

Good Ofsted rating for Milton Park Primary School |

Congratulations to Milton Park Primary School for achieving a Good rating following a recent Ofsted school inspection, with 'Outstanding' judgements for personal development and early years provision. In their report, inspectors highlighted:
"Pupils love coming to this wonderfully inclusive school. Staff have created a nurturing environment, so pupils feel safe and listened to. Pupils understand their emotions and staff help pupils to feel calm and ready for learning. Pupils’ achievement is improving each year because staff focus well on the areas that make the most difference to pupils’ understanding."

Following a full Ofsted inspection carried out in May 2024, HSDC is proud to announce that it has retained its overall ‘Good’ grading with outstanding features - including the highest possible rating of ‘Strong’ for its contribution to meeting local, regional and national skills needs plus an ‘Outstanding’ rating for its Adult Learning provision.
Reminder: no current changes to the RSHE guidance |

A reminder that the recently issued RSHE guidance is still under draft and not yet in place. Schools should continue with their original RSHE curriculum and not make any changes at this time. The draft was released for public consultation, and there may be significant changes before it is formally published.
Until any updates are agreed and finalised, the RSHE guidance introduced in 2019 remains in force. The current statutory guidance can be found here.

The Educational Psychology team have produced a newsletter which flags and signposts important research, including research into the importance of reading at home and the link between emotional needs and literacy, recommended technology for the classroom and the current support offer for struggling readers in secondary schools, which is fully funded by the PEIA.

The Golden Threads suite of courses is a valuable resource designed to help teachers and educators enhance their teaching practices by integrating arts, culture, and creativity. Covering a range of topics, from introducing creative teaching methods to exploring the connection between creativity and wellbeing, Golden Threads offers practical strategies that can enrich the educational experience.
For those living or working in Portsmouth, these self-guided courses are available for free, allowing educators to learn at their own pace and apply new techniques in their classrooms. By engaging with these resources, teachers can inspire their students, making learning more meaningful and impactful.
Fairtrade Fortnight (9 - 22 September 2024) |

Fairtrade Fortnight 2024 will run from 9 – 22 September. It’s 30 years since Fairtrade products first hit the shelves and this year Fairtrade Fortnight spotlights how YOU can Be The Change, by choosing Fairtrade every time.
A wealth of resources for schools can be found on the Fairtrade Foundation website, including lesson plans, assembly plans, films, activities and games. These teaching tools are designed to support learning about Fairtrade and global issues at all key stages and levels, from nursery through to secondary school.

This year, Portsmouth SCITT will be facilitating specific EYFS sessions for both ECT1 and ECT2 teachers who are in schools using HISP as their appropriate body.
The sessions will be available to book on the portal when it opens. All sessions will be held in the SCITT training centre within Stamshaw Junior School and facilitated by Emma Cornish. Session dates are:
