New UK Government
As an arm’s length body of the Department of Health and Social Care, we paused some of our communications in the run up to the general election.
Following the results of the general election on Friday 5 July we now have a new government and cabinet in post and our communications will return to normal.
The Labour Party’s manifesto and plan for the life sciences sector includes commitments that we will play a part in making happen:
- lead the world in clinical trials by speeding up recruitment and improving the diversity of people who participate in research
- make it easier to take part in research via the NHS App
- continue the work to implement the recommendations make by Lord O’Shaughnessy in the review of commercial clinical trials in the UK
- create a new Regulatory Innovation Office to help regulators update regulation and speed up approval timelines
We are looking forward to working with the new government to realise these.
Make it Public: insights into barriers to registering research
The insights were developed at our Make it Public workshop. The workshop saw more than 100 people from across the research sector come together to discuss research transparency and how to achieve 100% registration of clinical trials on a publicly accessible database.
Attendees identified four key themes as barriers to registration, which will inform our work to achieve 100% registration.

HRA responds to phase two Declaration of Helsinki consultation
We’ve responded to the second phase of a consultation on revisions to the Declaration of Helsinki (DOH).
The DOH is a statement of ethical principles for medical research involving humans. It was established in 1964 and is regarded as the most important document in the history of research ethics.
Our response included input from public contributors who are members of the HRA’s public involvement network.
The consultation was launched by the World Medical Association to ensure the DOH continues to address evolving ethical global challenges. We responded to the first phase of the consultation earlier this year.
Problems with submitting final reports on the HRA website
Unfortunately, some parts of the HRA website are not working as they should, and this is causing issues with submitting final reports on the site.
If you need to submit a final report, please get in touch with us on 0207 104 8000 or email approvals@hra.nhs.uk and we will send you a form you can use in the meantime.
We are working hard to resolve the issue and we will be sharing the latest updates on our website and social media channels.
Thank you for your patience and we are sorry for any inconvenience.
