🆕Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People celebrates Disability History Month

You are invited to a celebration event to recognise UK Disability History Month and the International Day of Disabled People, to be held at Manchester Central Library, Performance Space, 11am to 3pm on Monday 4 December. 

The event will be opened by Cllr John Flanagan, lead member for Disability and closed by Cllr Joanna Midgley, Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council and Executive Member for Equalities. The theme of Disability History Month is Disability, Childhood and Youth.

The event will include:

• Historical talk from Dr Ros Oates, Reader in History at Manchester Metropolitan University, on experiences of deaf children in early modern England
• Performances and speeches from community members
• Community groups panel and stalls
• Self portraits workshop (optional)

Food and drink included, provided by Open Kitchen. BSL interpreter available and regular comfort breaks.

GM Business Growth Hub

🆕Business opportunity to attend SXSW in Austin, Texas March 8 to 16, 2024

GM Business Growth Hub is opening up applications for businesses to travel and attend the festival together with the organisation.

In March 2024, GM Business Growth Hub will be heading to SXSW Austin, Texas, an essential destination for global professionals. South by Southwest® (SXSW®) celebrates the convergence of tech, film, music, education, and culture.

The annual event features conference sessions, Film & TV Festival screenings, Music Festival showcases, world-class exhibitions, competitions, awards ceremonies, and much more. 

This renowned cultural event is an ideal opportunity for GM creative businesses to immerse themselves in conferences and festivals that celebrate the convergence of tech, film, music, education, and culture from all corners of the world.

Manchester Disability Collaborative is currently seeking the views of disabled people to inform their aims for 2024. 

The Collaborative aims to improve Manchester for disabled people living and working here, and picks four priorities each year to work on. They're keen to involve as many disabled people as possible, along with their parents, carers and other stakeholders.

Diverse & Equal

Diverse & Equal have been commissioned by the Digital Strategy Team at Manchester City Council to deliver a piece of explorative research.

They are seeking to understand and enhance the impact of the local digital skills provision on talent experiencing structural inequality and they need your help. Structural inequality leads to unequal access to resources and opportunities for marginalised social groups. They are asking the question - how might working in the digital industry tackle the system of structural inequality - enabling potential learners from marginalised backgrounds to achieve their goals without additional barriers. This project aims to help understand the barriers (perceived and actual) to training and the industry - so that they can provide a list of recommendations on the work necessary to remove barriers and improve social mobility.

The Manchester College

The Manchester College wants to find out about adult demand for learning. Take part in their short survey and you could enter a prize draw to win one of four £25 High Street vouchers!

If you’re aged 19 or over and are interested in learning in the future then you are eligible to complete the survey. Responses must be submitted by 30 November to be eligible for the prize draw.

It's Never Too Late To Start Volunteering

Volunteering is when someone spends time doing something to benefit others. It can
include shopping for someone, being a mentor, assisting someone with a job search,
giving reading lessons, helping at a food bank, befriending – and much more.  Anyone can volunteer; you can do as much or as little as you like, to fit around
your life. It may be a regular activity, a one-off, or anything in between. Volunteering is
for people of all ages, abilities, experiences and backgrounds. You don’t need any skills or qualifications to begin volunteering. Your past experiences may be extremely useful when volunteering

Volunteer Centre Manchester
The Volunteer Centre has a site where you can find details of local volunteering opportunities, advice on volunteering, help with finding the right volunteer role, and more.

MCRVIP
MCRVIP is a volunteering site managed by Manchester City Council. This is where you can find opportunities to volunteer with Council teams such as Libraries, MCRactive and Manchester Art Galleries.

Manchester Adult Education
Opportunities with Manchester Adult Education vary. By volunteering with them you can help others to learn and develop their own skills.

Factory International Venue Hire

Throughout the year Factory International's spaces will be available for event hire. Due to the flexibility of their space they can hold:

PlanBEE

Meet the Employers' Event

Thursday 30 November at 5pm

Interested in engineering, architecture, design or other construction careers? Then their PlanBEE Manchester Higher Level Apprenticeship in Design, Construction and Management could be just for you.

It offers a paid alternative to university, studying for an industry recognised qualification, underpinned by an HNC/D and provides a pathway to future career development. Plus you’ll be working for some of the city’s leading employers including Manchester City Council, Manchester Life, Ryder, Purcell, Mace and Morgan Sindall.

With a starting salary of circa £21k+ per year, you'll also benefit from a pension plan and a generous holiday entitlement.

Throughout the apprenticeship, you'll be taught multiple disciplines within the sector including architecture, building engineering and construction/site management all with a strong emphasis on digital skills

You’ll need to have already completed GCSE (Level 2) and A Level (or equivalent Level 3) study and be eligible to apply for university level study in the UK. you’ll also need:

• 3 A Levels at grade C and above
• A BTEC Extended Diploma (averaging merits / distinctions)
• The equivalent of 96 UCAS points plus GCSE Maths, Science and English at grade 4 (C) or above.

The programme is open to anyone aged 18 and over living in a Manchester City Council postcode area or attending a Manchester school or college.

Get involved in Small Business Saturday!

Small Business Saturday returns on 2 December and is celebrating its second decade in the UK!

The grassroots, non-commercial campaign celebrates small business success and encourages consumers to 'shop local' and to support businesses in their communities.

On Small Business Saturday customers across the UK go out and support all types of small businesses, from independent shops and restaurants to small service and b2b based businesses like accountants and digital marketeers. Many small businesses take an active role in promoting the day by hosting events and offering promotions.

The campaign is open to all small businesses across the UK, and it is completely free. A marketing pack is available from the Small Business Saturday website, and businesses can get involved in the online conversation using the hashtag #SmallBizSatUK.
