 NHS Staff Survey results 2022
Update from Jon Lenney, LCO director of workforce and organisational development
The results of the 2022 NHS Staff Survey have now been published. Thank you to everyone who took the time to fill out the survey and share their views. Full analysis of the anonymous feedback is still taking place, but I'm delighted to be able to say that a first review indicates that there has been an improvement in staff perceptions in most areas this past year.
The results suggest that most staff find the LCO a great place to work, with real improvements in the questions that align with the People Promise themes of compassionate leadership, personal development, and teamwork. Furthermore, while the survey reflects the ongoing work pressures faced by staff, work-related stress and the stressors that contribute to it have all improved this year.
You can see in this first-look breakdown [PDF, 493KB] our results and how they compare to the MFT overall scores (MFT is named Your Org in the slides). However, once we've completed our full analysis, I'll provide you with an additional update outlining our full results and next steps.
Best wishes
Jon

Equity First issue 6 out now!
We've been producing our very own newsletter for some time now that talks about our equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) action plan and what work we're undertaking to achieve becoming an anti-racist and equity first employer. This is known as Equity First, and we're pleased to be able to share with you today our sixth issue!
In this copy, like the others, you'll find a selection off really great content that's both informative and practical for you and your teams to use. This includes items such as details of why allies in the workplace are needed, key terminology to help improve your knowledge and understanding of all things EDI, and advice and guidance on how you can support your fellow colleagues during Ramadan and Eid. In addition, there are details of other religious festivals like Easter and what's on for you and the little one’s (or big kids!) next half term at affordable prices. The issue truly is jam-packed, and there's something to interest everyone, so please take some time to have a read.

Monday was World Oral Health Day, and our LCO teams such as the North Manchester Community Stroke and Neuro Service (as pictured) and Buccleuch Lodge were hands on deck to help promote and raise awareness among our patients and service users of the importance of good oral health.
World Oral Health Day aims to increase the confidence of people and equip them with the right advice, tools, and techniques for how we can keep our gnashers clean and free from tooth decay and gum diseases. This is another fantastic example of how you all go above and beyond caring for our patients and communities. But before we let you read on, take a look at the poem [PDF, 85KB] that the super-talented staff at Buccleuch Lodge put together. It talks about a character called Buccleuch Bee and why they should be brushing right.
To help mark the NHS’s 75th anniversary in July, NHS England and Inspiring the Future have teamed up to inspire children and young people to consider a career in the NHS. Therefore, the initiative is looking for NHS staff, from all levels and professions, to register and commit to a minimum of an hour a year to go into schools and colleges – in person or virtually, to inspire the NHS workforce of the future.
If this is something you’d like to get involved with, then visit the Inspiring the Future website for further information.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service is continuing to promote the importance of smoke alarm testing and escape routes via their awareness campaign. Having a working smoke alarm and a plan for how to get out, as we all know, can help save valuable lives. Therefore, as a reminder, their campaign website has lots of useful resources, such as leaflets and the free home fire safety check tool, that you can use to talk about fire safety with patients or individuals you may be supporting. They’ve also asked, where suitable, that you build fire safety into assessments. Further details can be found on the GMFRS website.

You’ll hear from Sian Packett and Sophie Rushton of the Manchester Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) team and get to hear about recent and upcoming changes that may impact services.
The sessions will be held on Tuesday 4 April from 11:00am to 12:00noon or on Thursday 6 April from 1:00pm to 2:00pm and are suitable for all adult social care colleagues as well as allied health professionals (AHPs).

The Workforce and Leadership workstream, which is part of the Allied Health Professionals (AHP) strategy, would like to gain a better understanding of the different types of peer and professional support that our AHPs access. This includes support such as coaching or in-service training.
Therefore, if you’re one of our AHPs working in a community health or social care team, please share in the short survey below what you access and how. The details you then provide will then help the workstream develop and make future improvements for you. The survey should take you just five minutes to completed and will close on Friday 14 April.
Over the last few months, we’ve been undertaking a review of the A Different Conversation toolkit. We’ve listened to your feedback, such as how you felt it was too long, sometimes confusing, and did not always easily support an annual objective setting conversation and have made some changes.
We'd now like to test whether the changes work better for you, but we need a few willing volunteers to help! If you'd be willing to help test out our revised toolkit and approach, then join us for our short virtual session on Tuesday 13 April at 12:30pm. You can reserve a place for this session by using the below Eventbrite link. If you're unable to attend but would still like to be involved, then email Liz Kundi, interim head of organisational development.

The session will take place via Microsoft Teams, and you can add the joining link to your calendar if for you’d like to attend. For further information, please email either Janet Suckley, LCO lead research champion, or Olivia Schaff, MFT community outreach librarian.
The pre-election period for all public sector organisations is now approaching for the upcoming local elections. Previously known as purdah, this is the period of time immediately before elections when specific restrictions on communications activities are in place.
It does not preclude staff from day to day activities, but we do need to be sure we're acting as politically impartial, so, for example, if you run an LCO social media account or are planning events that may involve local politicians etc., you may need some further advice. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to email the LCO communications team.
There's some more detailed NHS England guidance [PDF, 121KB] available as well.
In just under a months’ time the Manchester Marathon is to take place on Sunday 16 April which means there will be several road closures in place. For those of you on duty this day, please use the Manchester Marathon website to help you plan ahead. They’ve a useful route map to show you which roads will be affected and what transport will still be running. If you have any questions or concerns, please liaise with your manager.
To mark the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday 6 May 2023, an additional bank holiday has been announced for Monday 8 May 2023.
Our arrangements will be in line with other bank holidays providing an extra day’s leave to all staff and paying public holiday rates for those that are working.
