The ERSCP works closely with partner agencies to keep children’s safety at the heart of everything we do.
This autumn, we are particularly active in promoting ‘safer sleep’ messages to parents and ensuring fathers are involved, so they too can play their vital role in keeping babies safe. The multi-agency Neglect and Environment Screening Tool (NEST) continues to be rolled out to all practitioners working with families to assess the risk of neglect in homes. Every family who is at risk should be supported immediately and appropriately.
During the summer, the Partnership team engaged with hundreds of families at Driffield Show to reinforce messages about water safety, keeping button batteries away from infants and the importance of supporting adolescent mental health. As the cold weather and longer nights of autumn draw in, children are at a higher risk during these colder months - particularly to our adolescents who are out and about on our roads - either on their bicycles or in cars. The key messages here are: wear a helmet, clip in that seatbelt and cut your speed!
There's been a lot of activity happening in our area recently, including the retirement of Kay Durrant, ERSCP independent scrutineer. We wish Kay well in her future endeavours. Rachel Stanton has taken over the role, bringing a wealth of experience. You can read more about Rachel by clicking the button below.
Additionally, a Front Door Health Check (FDHC) is to be undertaken, taking into consideration the multi-agency Front Door arrangements and response. Partner agencies will be briefed in more detail at the Strategic Delivery Group on Monday, 22 September.
We also share updates on the Child Death Overview Panel, the National Child Safeguarding Practice Review Panel, the Local Child Safeguarding Partnership Activities, and the Joint Targeted Area Inspection (JTAI).

The ERSCP team had a stand at this year's Driffield show, which provided a great opportunity to get out into the community and speak with children and families.
We shared key summer safety messages with children, young people and families on themes of water safety, safety at home, and being safe when out and about during the school holidays.
We also shared our personal safety survey, with 120 teens taking part, and 160 children and families completing our summer safety Hook-a-Duck quiz.

World Suicide Prevention Day was Wednesday, 10 September. It’s a global movement focusing on raising awareness of suicide, reducing stigma, and encouraging strategies and actions to prevent suicide.
This year’s theme of ‘Changing the narrative on suicide,’ highlighted the importance of starting a conversation about suicide.
For more advice on creating a healthy approach to mental health in your workplace, MHFA have help available.

Studies show that many new dads feel ignored and left out by services, which may mean they don’t ask for help when they’re struggling.
With at least one in 10 men experiencing mental health problems around the time of birth, and suicide remaining the leading cause of death in men under 50, there can be unique opportunities for midwives, health visitors and other healthcare professionals to identify any concerns and offer timely support.
There are a number of resources available to gain a deeper understanding of this topic.
We also have some useful information regarding safe sleep and Keeping Babies Safe.
|
Once baby is born, the first year of life is crucial. Safer Sleep messages are still being ignored by some families. A baby’s airway is very delicate and needs to be kept open and clear.
Parents can help with this by not letting babies sleep in anything that keeps them in a seated or inclined position such as a bouncy chair, baby hammock, baby swing, baby beanbag or sleep positioner. Sleeping in a sitting position (including when the baby is a bit congested with cold-like symptoms) can fold the baby’s airway and stop them breathing. More details and advice on protecting baby’s airway can be found at Lullaby Trust.
Beyond safer sleep, we have more resources regarding keeping babies safe, including the RSV vaccine and Foetal Alcohol Spectrum. Read more at the button below.

The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health Research was launched in November 2024.
The centre combines expertise from the University of Hull with those of their partners.
There are three themes within the Centre's research, with one of particular interest of the ERSCP:
"Improving care pathways and outcomes for young people with substance use and mental health problems. We aim to improve care pathways for young people (i.e. 10-18 years) with substance use and mental health problems who often miss out in getting the help they need."
If you are a professional within the field or work closely with young people relevant to this project, please email Ayisja, patient and public involvement & engagement coordinator.
The Centre have a document outlining this research further, which you can read at the button below.
