As part of Coventry's partnership with the regional violence reduction unit, all can refer into St. Giles, if they are concerned about a child involved in criminal activity. St. Giles use mentors with lived experience to support and guide children. St Giles have been working in Coventry for nearly 2 years and have an office base in the City. Coventry City is committed to preventing and reducing violence for children under it's 10 year strategy which launched in 2020.
School is often the only constant, safe, stable place a child has in their life and we are committed to supporting our schools to keeping vulnerable children in education where they belong. Research suggests that once a child is excluded their vulnerability to exploitation, violence and crime dramatically increases.
If you have concerns about a child in your schools there are places to seek immediate help. We have an early help process, we have a specialist team of police and social care to work with high risk children and we also have many diversionary activities on offer in the City. Please reach out, we are here to answer your questions or help point you in the right direction.

Primary conference featuring Jasper Green, Ofsted HMI for science
Coventry City of Culture are looking for 4-5 young people aged 14 upwards to work with a team of international architects from around the world including Egypt, Brazil & Denmark to explore the ideas of safe and welcoming spaces for young people in Coventry. The idea is to challenge architecture by looking at what we need as a community and build the space around that, rather than already having a space & adapting it to fit.
Who are we building the space for? How do we make the space feel safe & welcoming to all? What should it look like? & many, many more avenues to be explored!
The group will take part in a series of online workshops to think about who buildings are made for and will ultimately co-design small-scale welcoming spaces which will be showcased as part of an exhibition near Lady Herbert’s Garden. Sessions will start mid-November with the hope that the building(s) (which will only be temporary) will be showcased in Spring 2022.
This invitation is open to any young person aged 14+.
If you think this is something that any of your young people would like to be involved in, please contact Rachael.Bignall@coventry.gov.uk as soon as possible with their name & email contact (or that of parents/carers) & I’ll set up a Teams meeting with the producer of the programme who will be able to run through the project in more detail.
Positive Images Peace Festival Poetry Competition
Coventry as you know is the City of Peace and Reconciliation, a poster with Peace written in various languages will be posted out to your school within the next couple of weeks. This poster is supporting the ‘City of Languages’ initiative which will celebrate all languages, both heritage languages and additional languages, with representation from Early Years education through to post-degree language learning, as well as adult learning and languages for the workplace. It will incorporate the first of a yearly awards ceremony for promising linguists, young interpreters, teachers and those using languages for business.
This initiative was devised by two practising Modern Languages teachers as a response to their frustrations regarding the profile of languages in the UK. They decided that they had two options: sit and moan or do something to try to make change. They have support from Coventry University, University of Warwick, Coventry MPs and councillors, the British Council, cultural institutes, schools, Coventry City Council, the Lord Mayor’s Peace Committee and local businesses.
