 Traffic Signal Tips
Traffic signals control the right of way and provide for an orderly flow of traffic. If a signal appears dark, such as during a power failure, stop as if there are stop signs in all directions.
When a traffic signal is out of order and flashes yellow or red, obey the signal:
- Flashing red is the same as a stop sign.
- Flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.

Driver Education: It Saves Lives, Reduces Crashes
The first six months after obtaining a driver license tend to be the most dangerous for teenage drivers across the nation, but Oregon's graduated driver licensing program has improved safety since it started in 2000. Motor vehicle crashes are the No. 1 cause of death for 15- to 20-year-olds.
A national study shows teens who take formal driver training in Oregon have much lower crash rates. Yet only about a third of eligible Oregonians actually sign up for driving classes, saying they don't have the time, money, or easy access to them. Oregon teens who took an approved ODOT driver education course have fewer crashes, traffic convictions, and suspensions. Find an ODOT-approved driver education course near you.

Time Change May Cause Drowsy Driving
Each spring when we move our clocks forward one hour, people often get one less hour of sleep — and that can be an issue for motorists. Drivers may not be as alert as they think they are when they get going in the morning and again in the evening. Driver fatigue and lack of attention can significantly increase the risk of a crash. Sleepiness slows reaction time, decreases awareness, and impairs judgment. Drive alert!

Pet Safety on the Road
You buckle up when you get in your vehicle. Make sure your pet is just as safe. If your pet travels inside the vehicle with you, remember that driving with any live animal on your lap presents a distraction and a significant risk for a collision. Oregon law requires a dog to be protected by a carrier or other restraint if transported on "the external part of a vehicle." Our pets love to be on the go with us.
