Children at crosswalk walking safely

January 31, 2022

Dear Safe Routes to School enthusiasts,

We are pleased to announce the opening of our Safe Routes to School grant opportunities today! We will be accepting applications February 1 through March 18 for three Safe Routes to School Programs, each of which uniquely helps communities better address barriers to students walking and rolling to school.

SRTS Planning Assistance

This service is available for up to 20 communities! Apply February 1-March 18.

  • Description: This service provides you with consultant resources and results in the creation of a locally adopted Safe Routes to School Plan that prioritizes solutions to addressing barriers to students walking and rolling to school. Tribes, cities, counties, and school districts are welcome to apply.
  • What’s new? We have special tactics for planning during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the past two solicitations, we were able to provide planning assistance to all communities that applied.

SRTS Education Grants

This program has about $1 million in available funding. Apply February 1-March 18.

  • Description: This grant helps communities grow capacity to engage students in educational programs like bicycle and pedestrian classes as well as engage families in special events like Walk+Roll to School day celebrations. Tribes, government entities, school districts, and non-profits are welcome to apply.
  • What’s new? We have new tiered programming to provide communities with the resources needed to start or maintain a successful Safe Routes to School program! Beginners can receive a grant as well as consultant services to help get a program started. Recently established programs can receive capacity building grants. Ongoing programs can receive innovation grants to try new things!

SRTS Construction Grants

This program has about $26 million in available funding. Apply for Part 1 February 1-March 18 (Note: Part 2 opens May 1.)

  • Description: Are you ready to build sidewalks and crossings for students to walk and roll safely to school? This grant provides state funds to build safety projects within a one-mile radius of schools to address barriers to students walking and rolling to school. Tribes, cities and counties are welcome to apply.
  • What’s new? Part 1 of the application will allow applicants to see over 80% of their total score very early in the process. After March 18, staff will share scoring information about all of the submissions for Part 1, so that applicants can see how their project will likely compete when they complete their application with Part 2. Part 2 of the application (May 1 – July 31) will require much more detailed information about the project, schedule and budget.

We here at ODOT are happy to offer application assistance!

The Safe Routes to School program is helping us carry out our Strategic Action Plan priorities of equity and a modern transportation system for Oregon. We are excited to see all the great applications that come in!

With much gratitude,

LeeAnne and Heidi
