Dear Parents, Guardians, Professionals who work with youth and young adults who are deaf or hard of hearing (D/HH) as well as Individuals who are D/HH,

The Oklahoma Deaf and Hard of Hearing Transition Coalition (OK-DHHTC) would like your assistance gathering pertinent data to drive our services for Oklahoma youth who have a hearing loss and those who work with and support them. If you are D/HH yourself, a family member of someone who is D/HH between the ages of 13-22, or a professional working with D/HH youth, you are welcomed and encouraged to participate in this survey (link below).

If you are not currently working with high school students with hearing loss in Oklahoma, but know someone who is, or are interested in distributing this invitation broadly to those involved with D/HH individuals, such as teachers/professionals, families, or adults who are D/HH in Oklahoma, please feel free to distribute it widely.

Child Count Notices

The special education child count was conducted on October 1. Students cleanly enrolled in your district on October 1 with active IDEA eligibility and an IEP have been counted. If you have students who are not showing on your “Child List” in the Single Sign-on SPED Child Count application (the official list), you may submit an appeal to have the students added to the report once all errors are corrected. Click here to read the procedures for submitting an appeal. We want every student counted who should be. Superintendents must certify by October 16 to be timely, if an appeal is not needed.

Special Education Services Signature Series

This Signature Series addresses trauma, problematic behaviors, and problem-solving. Through case studies, humorous stories, and examples of everyday challenging situations, participants will learn to implement nationally recognized educational leaders' strategies and interventions. Jessica Minahan kicked off the series, and Dr. Bryan Pearlman continues with heartfelt stories about students' basic needs and how they learn best.

Date and Time

Thursday, December 3, 2020

9:00 AM – 12:00 Noon

Zoom Information Coming soon.

Maslow Before Bloom

Maslow Before Bloom means that basic human needs must be addressed before learning can occur. If a student is hungry, tired, or scared—give them food, a nap, or a personal connection. This does not require board approval or a bond issue. It seems so simple. It is simple. It is also very effective. This presentation addresses the human side of things that lead to higher levels of learning.

Dr. Bryan Pearlman will present real-life stories, current research, hands-on strategies, and a problem-solving approach that is easy to implement and effective. Together, he believes, we can change a student's life trajectory!

maslow

Dr. Bryan Pearlman, author of Maslow Before Bloom: Basic Human Need Before Academics, is a veteran teacher and administrator, a licensed mental health therapist, a keynote speaker, and an adjunct professor. His expertise is trauma, challenging behaviors, self-care, and achievement for all students. Dr. Pearlman has presented to tens of thousands of people across the country and professional development training for state, regional, and national organizations. He is also the co-founder and board member of the mental health non-profit Distinguished School of Mental Health and Wellness (DSMHW.org).

Graduate Center for the Study of Early Learning

The Graduate Center for the Study of Early Learning hosts an annual speaker series in support of their mission to promote evidence-based policies and practices that improve outcomes for young children and their families. They have had James Heckman, Bruce Perry, Ruby Payne, Patricia Kuhl, Pat Levitt, and Craig and Sharon Ramey. This year the virtual event will feature Camille Catlett, who has done extensive work to improve the capacity of personnel to effectively serve young children with disabilities and other diverse needs.

The event is October 23 and is free.

Camille Catlett is a consultant based in Carrboro NC. In her years in the early childhood field, she held positions in public school, professional association, federal government, and higher education settings, that ranged from direct service as a speech-language pathologist to director of multiple US Department of Education personnel preparation grants. As part of the 20+ year sequence of system change projects at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute (University of North Carolina), Camille led efforts in over 30 states to incorporate explicit emphasis on children and families of diverse cultures, languages, abilities, and life circumstances in pre-service and ongoing professional development efforts in over 30 states. Her work with talented partners on the Crosswalks project yielded a flexible and evidence-based model for enhancing higher education courses and programs. That model was successfully replicated in community colleges in five states, and summarized in the “Blueprint” document. Camille currently supports early intervention and early childhood colleagues through technical assistance, research, presentations, writing, and product development. Her work in multiple states focuses on incorporating an explicit and intentional emphasis on cultural, linguistic, and individual diversity and equity in early childhood and early childhood special education coursework, field experiences, and program practices.

Recent Advances in Understanding Word-Level Reading Problems: Implications for Instruction and Intervention

LIVE WEBINAR - Friday, November 6th, 2020
9am to 11:30am - Morning Session     •     12:30pm to 3:00pm - Afternoon Session

This session will focus on how children learn to read words and why some children struggle. Understanding the nature of word-level reading development and word-level reading problems will guide both instruction and intervention. Studies consistently show that the most commonly used intervention approaches provide limited benefits for weak readers. However, other studies have shown that some approaches can yield very large reading gains for such students, and these will be the focus of the presentation.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
As a result of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Understand common misunderstandings about how children read words
2. Understand what scientists have found about how children learn to read.
3. Identify the most effective instructional principles to prevent reading difficulties in young children.
4. Identify the most effective principles to guide intervention for children with word-level reading difficulties.

DR. DAVID KILPATRICK, PhD, is a professor of psychology for the State University of New York College at Cortland. He is a New York State certified school psychologist with 28 years experience in schools. He has been teaching courses in learning disabilities and educational psychology since 1994. David is a reading researcher and the author of two books on reading, Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties, and Equipped for Reading Success, and is a co-editor of a third, Reading Development and Difficulties: Bridging the Gap Between Research and Practice.
