The grand opening of any store is something to celebrate, but when the closest place to buy groceries and other necessities is over 40 miles away, a new store is life changing! On October 27th, a new Family Dollar/Dollar Tree opened in Sandy Valley to serve the 2,000+ residents of Sandy Valley and neighboring Goodsprings. Now, instead of spending a minumum of 2 hours for a simple shopping trip, residents have access to most of the things they need close to home. And, there are even hitching rails out front so people can ride to the store!
The journey to get this store approved and built has been challenging, but thanks to the determination of J Dapper and the Dapper Development team, it is now a reality. In honor of this momentous occasion, Commissioner Jones and J Dapper actually saddled up after the ribbon cutting. Rocky, the Sandy Valley Pet Mayor, was also in attendance. You can learn more about him in the Rural Connections section below.

Commissioner Jones was invited by 3rd grade teacher, Ms. Tabeek, to speak to her class at Jan Jones Blackhurst Elementrary School about planning and zoning. The concepts of planning and zoning can be hard to imagine, but living in District F, these kids see it in action on a daily basis whether it is new housing, road improvments, or commercial construction.

Driving around southwest Las Vegas it is easy to see that it is the fastest growing area in the valley. Many roads and infrastructure projects have been completed in the past few years to make traveling in the area easier and safer - but there are still more to come. Check out the 5-Year Project list below to see if improvements are coming to your neighborhood.

Sandy Valley's first Pet Fest was held on Saturday, October 8th at Peace Park. A vaccine clinic was provided by The Animal Foundation and over 150 pets received vaccinations. The event also included free dog grooming, a dog bone buffet, a photo booth for pet/owner portaits, and the opportunity to vote for Sandy Valley's first Pet Mayor. The candidates were Tango the Bearded Dragon and Rocky the Burro. Votes were cast by making donations to the Sandy Mesquite Valley Development Association for the events they do for the community throughout the year. Rocky garnered the most donations and won in a landslide. Rocky is a 5 year old burro that was born to the last female burro in the Goodsprings herd of wild horses and burros. Unfortunately, his mom was killed and he was left an orphan at two weeks old. He was adopted by Meggan and Robert Holzer in Sandy Valley and has grown into a big, healthy, friendly guy. He is required to attend the 4th of July celebration and one other event of his choice during the year. His first act as Mayor was attending the Grand Opening of the Family Dollar store in Sandy Valley on October 27th.
