2024-2025 K-20 World Language Leaders Meetings
Thank you for holding the dates for the 2024-2025 World Language Leaders meetings that were shared in the 4th Quarter Bulletin in late May. As was described, these meetings for K-12 World Language Leaders (central office personnel, building or department heads, or other educators designated to gather information about World Language programs and standards) and colleagues at our Institutes of Higher Education (IHE) campuses are being expanded from what we've done in the past.
The 2024-2025 World Language Leaders meetings will be held virtually from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm on the Wednesdays indicated below. There will be four meetings, instead of two, in the weeks before and after the FLANC Conferences, and the format is being changed to include discussion activities in breakout rooms.
It would be ideal to have one representative from every Public School Unit (PSU), or district and charter school, so that individual can be part of the policy and planning conversations statewide and then take information back for their PLCs, department meetings, or other local convenings. These meetings will use collaborative notes and be recorded, so there will also be an archive created over time.
Please click on the K-20 World Language Leaders Meetings flyer below, which is housed in Canva, to submit your registration for each meeting. The flyer can also be accessed at https://go.ncdpi.gov/K-20WLLmeetings.
Standards Installation Phase Timeline Progress
World Language Materials Available Now for Download
The 2024 North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCoS) for World Languages was approved at the July 2024 State Board of Education (SBE) meeting, and there are three documents that have been released to date. Please verify that you have downloaded each of the ones listed below, and feel free to distribute them to others. If you need the QR codes, they are in the August 2024 World Languages Installation Newsletter.
- The 2024 NCSCoS for World Languages at https://go.ncdpi.gov/2024NCSCOSWL is a 19-page PDF. The new standards are titled 2024 because that is the year they were adopted by the SBE; however, we will continue to use the 2010 NCSCoS for World Languages throughout the 2024-2025 school year. Initial implementation of the new standards will begin in 2025-2026.
- The World Languages Crosswalk at https://go.ncdpi.gov/WLCrosswalk is a 40-page PDF document that outlines how the standards, strands, and objectives from the 2010 NCSCoS have been reordered, recombined, and revised in the new 2024 NCSCoS for World Languages.
- The 2024-2025 World Languages' Installation Timeline at https://go.ncdpi.gov/WLInstallation is a Canva flyer where details will be added throughout the year about webinars, meetings, conference presentations, in-person regional trainings, and so on.
2024 NCSCoS for World Languages Quick Overview
For September, the NCDPI World Languages Team is releasing the 2024 NCSCoS for World Languages Quick Overview, which is a one-page PDF document that has a dozen questions and answers about the new standards.
Please download a copy by clicking on the embedded link above or the picture of the document in this article. It can also be accessed by going to https://go.ncdpi.gov/WLQuickOverview.
The 2024 NCSCoS for World Languages Quick Overview will be a handout for the webinar on September 16 and a breakout discussion topic at the K-20 meeting on September 18. It will also be disseminated in the September 2024 World Languages Installation Newsletter.

New Resources to Share
LIS in the Content Areas Resource Document
The new resource, Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) in the Content Areas, is a document that provides a snapshot of what the LIS may look like in the content area classroom. The seven LIS Components included in this resource illustrate how the LIS may be tailored for disciplinary purposes. Please note that the LIS Components for reading foundational skills, small group instruction, and observation and assessment are not included in the resource (pictured below) as these standards and practices are consistent across all classrooms.
The following content areas are included in this resource:
- Science
- Math
- Social Studies
- Arts Education
- Physical & Health Education
- Career & Technical Education
- Language Acquisition
The examples included in this document are not intended to be the curriculum, nor do they indicate the whole of a curriculum to be written by a Public School Unit (PSU). The instructional examples do not include all of the LIS practices listed for each LIS and do not serve as the only method for addressing the LIS. The items listed in this document are intended to assist in the planning of local curriculum and classroom instruction. Educators should use their professional judgment when developing curriculum and instruction that utilize the LIS and their accompanying practices and when adapting and aligning the instruction for their content area’s Standard Course of Study (NCSCoS).
Please access this resource by going to the LIS in the Content Areas document in Canva or clicking on the screenshot of the Language Acquisition section in this article.
The LIS will be fully implemented in all districts beginning in the 2024-2025 school year. Refer to the LIS Toolkit for additional resources.
