Standards Revision Progress & Professional Development Plans
State Board of Education Presentations for Draft 3
The World Languages Standards Writing Team (SWT) finalized Draft 3 of the proposed K-12 Standard Course of Study for World Languages, and it will be presented to the State Board of Education (SBE) for discussion at the meeting on June 5 - 6, 2024.
The SBE meetings are livestreamed, and the World Languages presentation is scheduled for the morning of Wednesday, June 5. All are welcome at the SBE meeting, either on-site at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation on NC State's campus in Raleigh or online on the NCDPI Public Meetings YouTube Channel via a web browser.
NCDPI staff will be presenting Draft 3 for action or approval at the July 11, 2024 SBE meeting, which is virtual. If the new state standards are approved, the Installation Phase will launch with the dissemination of the new standards in late July, along with the initial support documents like the Crosswalk that shows how the old and new standards compare.
Canvas Course Closeouts
July 2024
The Counselor Advising and Scheduling Tips (CAST) for World Languages self-paced Canvas course will be closed out at the end of July 2024 or whenever the new standards become available publicly. After that, it will be revised and updated, then released as part of the professional development towards the end of the Installation Phase in 2024 - 2025 or at the beginning of the Initial Implementation Phase in 2025 -2026.
The DL/I Blue Book Study, which is also available as a self-paced Canvas course in the HomeBase NCEES PD space, will be closed out and archived in July 2024. It focuses on Educating English Learners (ELs) for a Transformed World (2009) and Thomas and Collier's research about dual language/immersion (DL/I). The DL/I Blue Book Study course will remain available in Instructure's Canvas Commons for any K-20 educator who wants to download it for free to adapt for use in a local instance of Canvas.
Please use the links in the Canvas Courses area of the World Languages Resources Hub at https://go.ncdpi.gov/WLresources to access more information about Canvas courses for World Language educators, including details about future offerings when they become available.

In early-mid August, an initial round of statewide professional development is tentatively being planned to introduce the new K-12 Standard Course of Study (SCoS) for World Languages, if it has been approved by the State Board of Education (SBE) in July. The August sessions may encompass an updated version of Literacy in World Languages from the Literacy Instruction Standards (LIS) Series - Part 2 in the 23-24 SY, and they are being outlined as 3-hour sessions that will likely be offered in-person and virtually in various regions and dates around the state. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.

Celebrations & Policy Changes for the Seal of Biliteracy
Graduations for the Class of 2024 include celebrating the students who have earned the Global Languages Endorsement (GLE), North Carolina’s Seal of Biliteracy.
Be sure to use #NCSoBLGLE to share pictures and posts on social media about GLE earners!
Please see the GLE webpage at https://go.ncdpi.gov/NCSoBLGLE for details about this diploma endorsement, including the recently posted Class of 2023 data, which is also visible on School Report Cards, and instructions for purchasing or printing the GLE Diploma Seals.
|
Work is underway to update details about all five of the High School Diploma Endorsements, plus add two more. The changes to the GLE, NC's Seal of Biliteracy include:
- Raising the minimum proficiency level to Intermediate Mid for the World Language requirement based on the increased rigor for outcomes in the proposed K-12 Standard Course of Study for World Languages;
- Expanding the options for the English requirement so that they mirror the paths available for World Language with course completion, CDM, or an external exam; and
- Clarifying the policy language overall based on feedback from the field.
The updates to the diploma endorsements policy (GRAD-007) are on the agenda at the State Board of Education (SBE) meeting on June 5 - 6, 2024 for discussion.
Updates to Statewide Directories
NC DL/I Program Directory Update Form
North Carolina's dual language/immersion (DL/I) programs are always growing and changing! And that means the NCDPI DL/I team is constantly updating the NC DL/I Program Directory, which is posted on the NCDPI DL/I page at https://bit.ly/NCDLIinfo under DL/I State Resources. Both the text and visual versions of the statewide directory feature contact information for administrators and principals, DL/I program website for the organization, school name where the DL/I program is housed, DL/I language, type of immersion, program model, year of launch, school website, etc.
Now you can help keep the NC DL/I Program Directory current! Please use the NC DL/I Program Directory Update Form to share new information about your DL/I program(s) at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, which will be added on an ongoing basis by the NCDPI DL/I Team. Also, If the information on the NC DL/I Program Directory for your organization (district, charter school, program, etc.) needs to be updated, you can use the same form, as often as needed.

Annual Update of K - 12 World Language Coordinators Directories
Coming in August!
There is also a statewide directory for K - 12 World Language Coordinators posted on the NCDPI World Languages Networking page, and it is updated annually through a survey that will be sent in August. Each public school unit (PSU) has at least one educator listed as the point of contact for when there are questions about local World Language programs, including the languages that are being taught, the location and type of programs, questions about student placement, etc.
See the View Only Google spreadsheets of K-12 World Language Coordinators with PSUs sorted in alphabetical order:
Typically, the World Language Coordinator is a central office administrator or teacher leader, who may also be responsible for professional development for World Languages (and other areas). PSUs are welcome to add multiple contact people, and the K - 12 World Language Coordinator State Directories can also be used to connect with others about questions on local policy implementation.
Please contact Dr. Ann Marie Gunter, K - 12 World Languages Consultant, at ann.gunter@dpi.nc.gov or 984-236-2831 with any questions about the Statewide Directories.
