Standards Documents Now Available
2024 NCSCoS for World Languages
The 2024 North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCoS) for World Languages is intended to cultivate proficiency and intercultural competence in a classical, heritage, or modern language and help develop globally collaborative students. The new standards reflect a number of updates and the latest research on language acquisition and learning for K-12 students, including:
- a reordering of standards to emphasize target language input before output,
- a recombination of strands to ensure alignment to national standards,
- an additional level of proficiency (Advanced High) to support increased rigor for proficiency outcomes, and
- a streamlined structure to reduce the duplication and repetition in objectives for each proficiency level.

World Languages Crosswalk
The World Languages Crosswalk provides a general comparison of the current 2010 World Languages Standard Course of Study and the new 2024 World Languages Standard Course of Study. It offers initial insight into similarities and differences between these two sets of standards.
For example, the World Languages Crosswalk shows how the objectives have been streamlined, with the current standards having 259 objectives, or 29 - 34 at each of the eight proficiency levels, but the new standards having only 14 per proficiency level for a total of 126 objectives across the nine proficiency levels.

Supporting Resources
Town Hall Discussions
The NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements undergo regular review and updating as part of the collaboration between the National Council of State Supervisors for Languages (NCSSFL) and the ACTFL, formerly called the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Originally published in 2012, NCSSFL and ACTFL completed the last revision to the Can-Do Statements in 2017, adding Intercultural Communication Can-Do Statements as well as clarifying and organizing the document. A core team has been working on the draft of a new update which is now ready for your feedback. You can provide input and comments two ways: (1) participate in small group discussions by attending a virtual Town Hall session next week or (2) provide individual feedback through an online survey.
To register for one of the Town Hall Discussions, which are virtual via Zoom at 7:00 – 8:00 pm ET, click on the date you are able to attend in order to go to the online sign-up form:
Participants will self-select a breakout room, choosing one area for an extended discussion on Performance Indicators (Intercultural Communication, Interpretive Communication, Interpersonal Communication, and Presentational Communication); all breakout rooms will first review and comment on the Proficiency Benchmarks for all four areas.
If you cannot participate in a Town Hall Discussion, you are welcome to provide input using the Comments & Feedback on the 2024 Proposed Update of NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements Google form. The online form will allow you to access a read-only version of the draft of the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements, and you can submit individual feedback through Monday, August 26.
NCSSFL and ACTFL are grateful for your interest and participation to shape the final version of this update to the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements.
