WRAL•News - Emily Walkenhorst | June 2, 2024: Proposal to revamp special education funding heads to NC lawmakers - State education officials want to revamp how funding is distributed for students with disabilities — a move that they think could provide more and better-tailored services for students with developmental delays, learning disabilities, and intellectual and physical disabilities. he North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, which oversees the state’s public schools, sent a proposal to state lawmakers in March that would fund special education based on the needs of the child, rather than the current practice: providing a uniform amount for every special education student, regardless of disability.
EdNC - Chantal Brown | June 7, 2024: Exceptional Children teacher pipeline is stressed, EdNC survey finds - While the state is still hiring more teachers than the number who left, turnover was highest among beginning and special education teachers. Roughly 20% of the state’s teacher vacancies were for K-12 EC teachers, according to DPI’s State of the Teaching Profession report.

NC DPI Press Release | June 4, 2024: Over 44,000 Elementary Educators Master Science of Reading Professional Development - Throughout the summit, postsecondary leaders from over 30 institutions across North Carolina had the opportunity to advance their knowledge in the science of reading, exchange information and hear from in-service teachers about their experience putting the science of reading into practice. The goal of the annual summit is to help develop and implement aligned processes and resources to increase support for teacher candidates before they enter the classroom.

Unlike many other states where legislative updates haven’t been met with adequate funding, North Carolina fully backed its commitment.

WITN - Web Team | June 3, 2024: State committee upholds decision to shut down Children’s Village Academy (WITN) A State School Board panel voted to uphold last month’s decision to close a Kinston charter school. In a special meeting this morning, the Education Innovation and Charter Schools Committee unanimously voted to not renew the charter for Children’s Village Academy when it expires at the end of the month. The full State Board of Education will vote on the appeal at its meeting on Thursday.
