CBS 17 News Joseph Holloway | Dec. 12, 2023: Computer science, coding programs expanding in Wake County schools - A CBS 17 crew spoke with Wake County Superintendent Dr. Robert Taylor and State Superintendent Catherine Truitt as they attended Tuesday’s “Hour of Code” event at East Millbrook Middle School to see some of the work students are doing. Computer science will become a graduation requirement for North Carolina students starting in the 2026-27 school year and Truitt says her department is already planning for that change by gathering data from districts across the state and seeing what their needs are.
NC DPI Press Release | Dec. 12, 2023: State Superintendent Celebrates Hour of Code with Middle Schoolers - Hour of Code events have become a cornerstone of computer science education in Wake County. In addition to introducing students to coding basics, this year's event places a special emphasis on design thinking principles. Design thinking is rooted in finding solutions to real-world problems by empathizing with the user of the product, creating and testing prototypes and generating creative ideas. A set of rubrics for these skills is available on the NCDPI website. Work on this project continues as task force members launch and test performance tasks related to the durable skills in classrooms this spring.
