Charter Schools Review Board Highlights

 

December 11-12, 2023

CSRB Basics

  • CSRB meetings are streamed live every month on the DPI Youtube page
  • Meeting agendas are posted to Eboard approximately a week prior to each meeting. 
  • The next regularly-scheduled CSRB meeting is January 8-9 at the DPI Building in Raleigh. 
  • CSRB member lists, previous minutes, and other information is housed on the OCS web page

December Applicant Interviews

Standard Applicants

The Charter Schools Review Board heard from four standard timeline applicants in December. These applicants were seeking approval to open in Fall 2025. The CSRB approved Carolina Achieve, Liberty Charter Academy, and Triad International Studies Academy. The CSRB denied the application for Myrtis Simpson Walker Academy for Boys.  

 

 

All submitted 2023 charter applications are available in the Office of Charter Schools section of the NC DPI web site.

 


Charter School Renewals: 2024 Introduction and Data Review

Ms. Jenna Cook presented information for the 2024 charter school renewal process and guidelines used to determine length of charter agreements. Pertinent information was shared regarding 9 charter schools in the 2024 cohort.

 

Three schools were presented as qualifying for 10-year renewals. The 3 schools were as follows:

 

Neuse Charter School

Sugar Creek Charter

Community School of Davidson

 

The remaining schools were given an opportunity to present information about their school and CSRB members asked follow-up questions. These schools were as follows:

 

Marjorie Williams Academy

Carolina International School

Community Public Charter

Hobgood Charter School

Movement School Eastland

Steele Creek Preparatory Academy

 

Charter School renewal votes will occur in February and/or March 2024. 


CSRB

Other Business:

  • Ms.Nicky Niewinski presented a request from Great Opportunities and Boundless Innovations for Girls (GO BIG) to amend their charter application. The amendment request will be voted on in January.
  • Ms. Ashley Baquero, OCS Director, presented updates related to OCS and other relevant information.
  • Federal Programs and School Business presented findings related to Children's Village Academy on behalf of NC DPI.
