EdNC Hannah McClellan | Oct. 26, 2023: This year’s legislative long session comes to an end - A little over a month since this year’s new budget passed, General Assembly leaders have announced that the 2023 legislative long session is nearly wrapped up. On Wednesday, the General Assembly ratified Resolution 2023-11, announcing adjournment of both the House and Senate on Oct. 25, following the Republican passage of new state congressional maps. Senate Pro Tempore Phil Berger, R-Guilford, said it’s unlikely that the legislature will return to vote on bills until next year’s short session begins on April 24, per a WUNC report.

Governor Cooper Press Release | Oct. 24, 2023: Governor Cooper Directs $1.4 Million to Expand School Breakfast Programs - Today, Governor Roy Cooper announced that he is directing $1.4 million in federal funding to assist schools in expanding school breakfast programs. The funds will be used to provide grants to school districts and charter schools to assist with implementing innovative school breakfast models to expand student participation in school breakfast. The Governor is partnering with the North Carolina Alliance for Health (NCAH) and the Carolina Hunger Initiative (CHI) on the program.

Carolina Journal CJ Staff | Oct. 20, 2023: State Supreme Court splits over new review of 29-year-old education funding case - The decision announced Friday split the court along party lines. Republicans agreed to hear the case again. Democrats dissented. State legislative leaders asked the state’s highest court in September to take the case again, bypassing the state Court of Appeals.

Recognizing and Supporting Educators

Last week, Secretary Cardona announced the 2023 recipients of the Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership. Recognizes principals who are committed to education as a powerful and liberating force in people’s lives. Part of the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program, (infographic and profiles).

WI-FI on School Buses - On October 19, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted to allow E-Rate funding to be used for wi-fi on school buses, beginning in funding year 2024, as the Emergency Connectivity Fund (ECF) is set to sunset.

This video highlights how NCDPI and military partners work with NC districts and schools to promote enlistment as a post-secondary career pathway.
