Charter Schools Review Board Highlights

 

October 17-18, 2023

CSRB Basics

  • CSRB meetings are streamed live every month on the DPI Youtube page
  • Meeting agendas are posted to Eboard approximately a week prior to each meeting. 
  • The next regularly-scheduled CSRB meeting is November 6-7 at the DPI Building in Raleigh. 
  • CSRB member lists, previous minutes, and other information is housed on the OCS web page

October Applicant Interviews

Standard Applicants

The Charter Schools Review Board heard from four standard timeline applicants in October. These applicants were seeking approval to open in Fall 2025. The CSRB approved Crossnore Community Center's application. The CSRB recommended Myrtis Simpson Walker Academy for Boys and Sledge Institute return for a Round Two interview to be held this December. The CSRB voted to deny Infinity STEAM Academy's application. 

 

Reconsideration Applicants

Two applicants were presented for reconsideration per recent legislation. American Leadership Academy Monroe's charter application reconsideration was approved which allows them to move forward in the ready to open process. Heritage Collegiate Leadership Academy's reconsideration was denied. 

 

All submitted 2023 charter applications are available in the Office of Charter Schools section of the NC DPI web site.

 


Recognition

Ms. Rhonda Dillingham recognized Mr. Justin Smith from Ascend Leadership Academy as the recipient of the Shining Star Innovation Award sponsored by Charter Success Partners. Mr. Justin Smith and two students from Ascend Leadership Academy shared how their school provides students with real world leadership opportunities as they prepare for college and beyond. Congratulations Ascend Leadership Academy! 

 

The CSRB also welcomed Alex Granados as Superintendent Truitt's appointee to the board as a non-voting member.

Other Business 

  • The Charter School Review Board members were sworn in and pledged their service to our students in North Carolina charter schools. 
  • Ms.Nicky Niewinksi presented a request from Bethany Community School to amend their mission statement. The amendment request was approved unanimously.
  • Apprentice Academy High School presented their school improvement plan to CSRB per SBE renewal stipulations. The plan was approved unanimously. 
  • CSRB voted to revoke School of Arts for Boys Academy's (SABA) charter on or before December 31, 2023.
