Note from Superintendent Truitt
Superintendents,
I hope you all are enjoying the beginning of the fall season and that you and your staff are feeling fully settled into the new school year!
While some budget items are not what we hoped, I am nevertheless pleased to say that we will finally have a solidified budget in coming days. I know this has been a somewhat turbulent journey to get to this point, so I hope that you are able to finally get through some necessary school planning.
I am also excited to remind you all that our first Superintendents' Quarterly Meeting is right around the corner on Wednesday, October 11, in Raleigh! I am also happy to share an agenda (below) and this pre-meeting questionnaire with you. We greatly appreciate your responses so we can ensure you are getting comprehensive answers to the questions you have.
Thank you all for everything that you do for those you serve throughout your districts. I look forward to seeing you all face-to-face at our convening next month at the 2023 AIM Conference!

Opportunity to Host Thought-Provoking Play, State of Urgency in Your Districts
In February, I had the honor of attending an original production of a play about gun violence and other social issues that many of our students deal with in their daily lives. The play was written by Mr. Wendell Tabb, the retired theater arts director at Hillside High School in Durham, and has been viewed by over 5,000 students and adults since last winter.
Mr. Tabb is now seeking to take the play to other school districts across the state of North Carolina. If you have an interest in learning more about bringing this thought-provoking play to your district, you can learn more here.

The Office of District & Regional Support within the Division of District & School Support Services is excited to announce the Fall 2023 NCStar & School Improvement Planning Professional Development!
This two-day training will be offered in eight different locations across the state during the months of September through November. These sessions will cover content similar to what was shared during the 2022-2023 trainings and will offer collaborative work time for each school improvement planning component. Fall 2023 sessions also offer new resources and strategies including tips for implementing recent changes to the 12 Key Indicators.
Day 1: Participants will learn about school improvement using NCStar and how to navigate the platform to assess, create and monitor school-based practices. Participants will also learn about the components of Set Direction in NCStar, including the use of Performance Measures to monitor progress of school improvement goals.
Day 2: Participants will continue to learn about school improvement using NCStar with a focus on the Continuous Improvement Cycle (Assess, Create, Monitor) to create robust school improvement plans. Participants will also learn about best practices for school improvement teams, including how to run an effective SIT meeting, effective forms of distributive leadership and the critical role that SIT leaders and committees play in moving the school achievement needle forward, and evaluation of a school’s School Improvement Plan.

Mastering Leadership Dynamics for Educational Leaders - PD for Principals
The four day professional development experience held at the Truist Institute in Greensboro, Mastering Leadership Dynamics™ for Educational Leaders, uses a blended learning approach that combines face-to-face and virtual sessions with interim activities. Beginning with the key competency of self-awareness, principals engage in learning how beliefs drive behaviors and ultimately create results. This simple model represents the core of what great leaders do and identifies the significance of awareness—of ourselves, others and organizations. Learn more about Mastering Leadership Dynamics for Educational Leaders and find registration information here.
DPI's Special Advisor on Principal Engagement, Tabari Wallace, will be hosting a training session entitled Igniting Engagement: Light the Spark! Through this training, participating principals will develop an understanding of the neuropsychology of employee engagement and how it effects organizational outcomes. They will also learn how principals influence motivational factors of satisfaction and energy as a leader, and identify strategies for igniting teacher engagement in your school. Learn more about Igniting Engagement: Light the Spark here.
