Older Americans Month

Every May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month (OAM), a time to recognize older Americans' contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm our commitment to serving older adults.

The 2025 theme, Flip the Script on Aging, focuses on transforming how society perceives, talks about, and approaches aging. It encourages individuals and communities to challenge stereotypes and dispel misconceptions. This year, join us in honoring older adults’ contributions, exploring the many opportunities for staying active and engaged as we age, and highlighting the opportunities for purpose, exploration, and connection that come with aging.

LIHEAP

Kentucky households may qualify for a one-time electric benefit through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Spring Subsidy Cooling Component. Applications will be accepted from April 15 to May 30, 2025, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Spring Subsidy is designed to help households with incomes up to 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines offset their cooling costs. It provides a one-time electric benefit, which is paid directly to the household’s electricity vendor.

Jefferson County residents wishing to apply must schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment system. Appointments can be scheduled by phone by calling 502-991-8391 or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com. This toll-free service is currently open and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

All applicants will be required to supply the following documentation at the time of application:

  • Proof of Social Security Number or Permanent Residence card (Green Card) for each member of the household.
  • Proof of income from the preceding month for all household members.
  • Most current electric bill, statement from your landlord (if electric is included in your rent), or statement from your utility company if you participate in a pre-pay electric program.
  • The account number and name on the account for your electric bill.

Spring Subsidy does not require a disconnect notice, a past due bill, or eviction notice. The Subsidy benefit can be applied as a credit on your account. Assistance received during previous LIHEAP components does not affect a household's eligibility.

Potential cuts coming to Health and Human Services Programs

On March 27, HHS announced it was “reorganizing” the Administration for Community Living (ACL) and would move critical programs to other departments at HHS.

Below are some ACL’s vital programs that are facing massive cuts or elimination in the leaked budget:

  • Protection & Advocacy Systems investigate abuse and neglect in institutions and provide legal services in cases of disability discrimination.
  • Developmental Disabilities Councils fund community programs that promote self-advocacy and community participation for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities provide research, training, and technical assistance on issues impacting people with developmental disabilities across the lifespan.
  • National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research funds important disability research and community education to promote equal access. It also funds the national network of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regional centers.
  • Other programs at risk for elimination provide assistive technology, family caregiver respite, senior nutrition programs like Meals on Wheels, and resources and support for those with traumatic brain injury and paralysis

How can you help?

  • Tell your representatives to protect ALL of the Administration on Community Living (ACL) programs that support people with disabilities. You can list the programs in bold above during your call.
  • Ask your representatives to make sure the programs listed in bold above are a priority in the upcoming budget process.
  • Share your story if these actions will affect you or a loved one, or if you benefit from one or more of ACL’s programs.

2025 Senior Cultural Pass

2025 Cultural Pass

The Senior Cultural Pass (also known as Senior Pass) is available to Greater Louisville and Southern Indiana residents age 65+ and offers FREE admission to over 50 arts, culture, history, and nature programs from May 31 – August 10.

With the help of The Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute at UofL and the Humana Foundation, we’re researching how Cultural Pass can improve the health of seniors in our community. As part of this second summer in the pilot process, eligible Senior Cultural Passholders will be asked to complete short surveys at the beginning and end of the summer (each survey will take an estimated 15 minutes to complete). Those who successfully complete both surveys are automatically entered to win 2 free tickets to an upcoming performance at Derby Dinner Playhouse in Jeffersonville, IN!

Please note that registration is limited to the first 1,000 eligible participants and that the program begins May 31. Eligible participants reside in Bullitt or Jefferson County in Kentucky or Clark, Floyd, or Harrison counties in Indiana and are 65 years of age or older. Your participation could make all the difference to helping create a better Cultural Pass for all!

Project warm

Project Warm, a 501c3 organization under Blueprint 502, has been around for 43 years in Louisville-Jefferson County.  In 1982, Project Warm was created through the financial support of Louisville Gas & Electric (LG&E) and Metro Louisville Government. Thanks to the generosity of LG&E and Metro Louisville, Project Warm has been able to improve our community, the environment and the lives of people we serve through free weatherization services and educational workshops for low-income residents, veterans and people with disabilities across Jefferson County. To ensure that Project Warm continues to make a positive impact in the community in so many ways, it's seeking a few board members to join them. If interested in learning more about Project Warm and the opportunity to be board member, please contact Chris Clements at (502) 636-9276 or outreach@projectwarm.org
