The 22nd annual WorldFest, Louisvilleʼs premier international festival, attracts more than 150,000 attendees over the four-day festival this Labor Day weekend.

Hike, Bike and Paddle on Labor Day! 

Hike, Bike & Paddle 2024 is Labor Day, September 2 from 8 a.m. to noon on the Waterfront Park Great Lawn.

Beginning at 8 a.m. there will be plenty of fun, music, and free fitness activities for you to enjoy. Get involved in activities like Yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba, Fitness classes, and Workout circuits to celebrate Labor Day weekend. 

Free t-shirts are available to the first 2,000 people. The t-shirt tent will open at 8 a.m., so make sure to arrive promptly to get in line! The Hike, Bike, and Paddle portions will starts at 10 a.m.

Louisville Zoo welcomes new addition during summer baby boom

The baby boom continues at the Louisville Zoo with the birth of a 19-pound female addax. The calf was born between 1 and 2 a.m. on August 23 to 6-year-old Reesie. The father is 6-year-old Winfield. Both mom and calf are doing well and are currently off exhibit as they continue to bond. The calf’s name will be announced in the coming weeks. The Zoo has had a successful breeding program with addax which are experiencing critical challenges in the vanishing wild. With drastically diminished numbers, some say they are on the verge of imminent extinction.  This latest birth brings the total of addax born at the Louisville Zoo to 61. The last calf born at the Zoo was Jira in 2020. Addax have been a part of the Louisville Zoo since it opened in 1969 and with this birth the Zoo is averaging more than an addax birth a year for this critically endangered species.

Louisville Zoo’s male Sumatran tiger leaves legacy of sired cub

The Louisville Zoo is saddened to announce the passing of Kami Sambal (cam-me -sahm-ball), a 16-year-old male Sumatran tiger that arrived in Louisville in late 2022. Kami leaves behind a notable legacy, having sired six cubs, including his most recent offspring, a male cub born on July 23 with 14-year-old female Jingga. With fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers remaining in the wild, the birth of Kami’s cub is an important milestone. Kami’s transfer to the Louisville Zoo included a breeding recommendation from the Sumatran tiger Species Survival Plan (SSP). The successful pairing of Jingga and Kami is a significant addition to this unique tiger population. Unfortunately, Kami started to show signs of advanced age after an unexpected and rapid decline in his health. Despite intensive care, medications and pain management, further examination revealed that Kami was suffering from a decline in kidney function and anemia, which is often indicative of underlying cancer, such as lymphoma—a condition frequently observed in geriatric tigers. Zoo medical staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him. “Saying goodbye to a member of our extended family is hard, but we always consider an animal’s wellbeing and what’s best for their overall outcome,” said Dan Maloney, director of the Louisville Zoo. “Our focus now is celebrating the incredible legacy Kami has left behind, both from his offspring and his impact as an ambassador for his species. Throughout his life, Kami helped inspire millions of guests to care deeply about wildlife and we honor his contribution to tiger conservation efforts.” Kami’s newest son is still behind-the-scenes bonding with his mom. However, the Zoo hopes to invite guests soon to see the tiger cub and share the joy of Kami’s final legacy. You can follow along as the youngster grows up at louisvillezoo.org/cubcam. Sumatran tigers, the last of the island tiger subspecies, are smaller than mainland tigers and are critically endangered. Fewer than 400 individuals are estimated to still survive in the wild. Found only on Sumatra, their habitat is threatened primarily by development for palm oil plantations. Palm oil is found in hundreds of foods, cosmetics and cleaning products. As global demand for palm oil accelerates, so does the loss of vital tropical forest lands that are home to countless unique plant and animal species. Choosing palm-oil free products and those containing sustainably grown palm oil helps preserve and protect wildlife and wild places.

Tickets for “Boo at the Zoo presented by Meijer” on sale

The Louisville Zoo’s ever-popular Boo at the Zoo presented by Meijer is celebrating 43 years of merry, not scary fun! Tickets are available at louisvillezoo.org/boo. This beloved event is a Louisville tradition and will begin early this year starting September 28 and running through October 27 (Thursday – Sunday nights). Tickets are all-inclusive and include Boo at the Zoo admission, parking, Spooktacular Carousel, “not-so-itsy-bitsy” Spider House and the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow attraction. Children and adults are invited to dress up in their wildest costumes for the after-hours event. Boo at the Zoo turns the Zoo into a living storybook, complete with favorite characters brought to life. There will be music, photo opportunities around every corner and, of course, a safe place to trick-or-treat for kids 11 and under. Guests are encouraged to bring their own trick-or-treat bags, but reusable treat bags will be available for purchase at the Zoo’s Gift Shop for $2 while supplies last. Tickets are $13.50 for all non-members 3 and older and $7 for all members 3 and older. Children 2 and under are free and do not require a ticket .Boo at the Zoo presented by Meijer is a rain or shine event. Ticket capacity is limited each night with popular nights expected to sell out quickly. On event days, the Zoo will close early for regular daytime visitors. Gates will close at 3 p.m. with guests being allowed to visit until 4 p.m. The party starts at 5 p.m. and Halloween guests will enter the Zoo at their ticketed time until 9 p.m. At 10 p.m., the trick-or-treat route will close, and all guests must exit the Zoo. Special Dates: Sensory-Friendly Hours at Boo at the Zoo, Sunday, October 20, enter 5 to 6:30 p.m., enjoy until 7 p.m. This night will feature a sensory-friendly trick-or-treating experience during these special hours with fewer lights, lower music and smaller crowds. Allergy-Friendly Night, Wednesday, October 23, features peanut-free treat booths and added non-food treats like stickers, pencils and more. The event draws tens of thousands of guests nationwide for this one-of-a-kind immersive pumpkin experience.

The Parks Alliance of Louisville is now selling tickets for their largest fundraiser! Jack O’Lantern Spectacular, presented by Thorntons, has become an annual tradition for Louisvillians and visitors alike. Last year’s event welcomed more than 110,000 visitors, the majority from outside of Louisville, contributing to more than $2.9 million in economic impact and more than 7,000 hotel room nights.

Jack O’Lantern Spectacular, presented by Thorntons, is celebrating its 12th year from October 1 to November 2 at Iroquois Park. This year’s theme is “Trivia Night: Pumpkin Edition,” and will test guests' knowledge as they meander through the woods, lined with thousands of artistically carved and locally sourced pumpkins. Guests will be quizzed on art history, music, folklore, and more. They can challenge their friends and family while experiencing the magic that is Jack O’Lantern Spectacular.

Recall on Great Value brand apple juice sold at Walmart

Kentucky is one of 25 states affected by Walmart's recall of nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice sold nationwide, which were found to contain potentially harmful levels of inorganic arsenic. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently escalated the recall's urgency, following its initial announcement on Aug.15. The updated classification indicates that while the contaminated product may lead to temporary adverse health effects, it is unlikely to result in serious or permanent medical problems. The recall affects 9,535 cases of Great Value brand apple juice distributed in 25 states, along with Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia.

Our Little Futsal League will start this November! It's for ages 3 to 4 and Tuesdays from November 12 to December 17. Teams will meet for drills and fundamentals followed by a short game. The registration deadline is Sunday, October 13. Registration fee is $20. Little Futsal games are played on the gym floor at Cyril Allgeier Community Center, so participants should not wear cleats.

Remember the Camp Taylor Elementary School pantry as you shop

Tiffany Bolling from the Family Resource Center has reached out to request food donations for the school pantry at Camp Taylor Elementary School. 

Not only do we feed our students and their families at Camp Taylor and Audubon Traditional Elementary Schools, we also have a food pantry in front of the school to feed the community. 

Our pantry is usually stocked through Dare to Care, but the food goes so quickly. Our homeless demographic has doubled from last school year. I am trying to keep up with the nutritional support I can provide, but it's a struggle.

If you are able to assist in getting us food to fill our pantry, donations can be sent to: Camp Taylor Elementary School, The Kid Connection FRC, 1446 Belmar Drive, Louisville, KY, 40213.

September 3 - next Homeless and crisis shelters: community listening session

The Coalition for the Homeless estimates that nearly 1,600 Louisvillians are experiencing homelessness on any given night, but the city only has 1,000 emergency overnight and transitional shelter beds, leaving 500 to 600 people without a place to stay each night. The Office of Planning has been tasked by the Louisville Metro Council to review and consider changes to the Land Development Code to expand access to homeless shelters and create options for temporary crisis shelters.

The Office of Planning invites you to attend listening sessions to provide your feedback and solutions to increase shelter access to all community members in need. The last two sessions are:

Once Upon An Orchestra” returns to Louisville libraries, providing free musical storytelling performances for families

The Louisville Free Public Library and the Louisville Orchestra announce the fourth season of the collaborative project “Once Upon An Orchestra.” Public performances begin on Tuesday, October 1 at the Western Library and will tour to all LFPL locations through March 2025.

Presented free, each branch will host one of six different, unique family programs that weave music and storytelling together in an interactive experience. Louisville Orchestra musicians perform original music created around familiar and beloved children’s books. The hour-long experiences include a 30-minute small ensemble performance preceded by a hands-on activity to build a musical instrument from recycled materials, so everyone can play along.

For “Once Upon An Orchestra,” composers from the LO Creators Corps have developed original musical scores to accompany a number of beloved children’s books, including Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. In addition, this year’s series features two new compositions – Laura Numeroff’s If You Give a Mouse a Cookie and Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson.

Enrollment continues for LIHEAP summer subsidy

Jefferson County residents can apply for electric assistance through Louisville Metro RCS Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Summer Subsidy is here to help Kentucky households offset summer cooling costs. Enrollment started July 16 and runs until September 13, or until designated funds are depleted, on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Summer Subsidy Component provides households with incomes up to 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines a one-time benefit ranging from $50 to $250 depending on income levels and housing category. Benefits are paid directly to the household’s electric vendor. Jefferson County residents wishing to apply may schedule an appointment utilizing the automated appointment system. Appointments can be scheduled by phone by calling 991-8391 or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com. The toll-free service is currently open and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Kentucky's Employee Child Care Assistance Partner Program

The Employee Child Care Assistance Partnership (ECCAP) helps employers meaningfully  contribute financial assistance directly to employee child care costs by matching their contribution up to 100 percent, potentially doubling the value of their employer-provided benefit. The Louisville Metro Down Payment Assistance Program provides low- to moderate-income homebuyers with down payment and closing cost assistance for purchasing a home in the Louisville Metro area.

The Team Kentucky Homeowner Assistance Fund is a program that can help homeowners impacted by the pandemic rebound and avoid foreclosure. Qualifying homeowners can apply for up to $46,350 in assistance to help with delinquent mortgage payments, property taxes, homeowner’s and/or flood insurance, homeowners association fees and utility costs. 

If you're 65 years old, own and occupy your primary residence, you may qualify to exempt the first $39,300 of your home value from property taxes through the The Homestead Exemption. Vets with service connected disabilities and totally/permanently disabled civilians may also qualify.

Locate Dare to Care food assistance locations, which include St. Stephen Martyr at 3015 Greenup Road, from 3:45 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays. Please call before visiting sites to verify hours of operation. 

Meals on Wheels is available to qualified seniors in Jefferson County, 60 years or older, who are homebound with no one available to help prepare meals. Call 574-6325 to begin the qualification process. For information on the senior congregate sites for more active seniors, 60 and older, call the number above or sign up at the RCS page. Sites require a one-day advance reservation. See the updated list of open congregate sites.  The Senior Nutrition Program seeks volunteers all year long to help in a variety of capacities. Trauma-trained mental health specialists are available at all eight Louisville Neighborhood Place locations for immediate and free assistance for any Louisville resident dealing with violence or other trauma. The most efficient manner to report crime and/or request to speak to an officer is to call Metrosafe Dispatch at 574-2111 (5) Furthermore, if the efforts of the officer were not reasonably adequate to address the concern or issue, a citizen can immediately call Metrosafe back and request for an LMPD supervisor to contact them.  For non-emergencies, dial 574-2111 (5)  for non-violent crimes, non-injury auto accidents, or to report a crime that has already occurred.  For emergencies, dial 911 for violent crime in progress, serious injury auto accidents, or immediate threat to human life.  To report ongoing criminal activity, dial 574-5673, the LMPD Tip Line, for drug dealing, prostitution, gang activity, or any information that may help close open investigations.

Short term rental enforcement continues in large part to be complaint-driven, based on public reporting of alleged violations to administrators.

An interactive map tool contains all of the registered short term rentals in Louisville having an active permit to rent their property out to paying customers on STR websites like Airbnb.

If you believe someone is using a property as a short term rental but it does not show up on this registry, or if the registry indicates a non-owner occupied property does not have a CUP, then please report the issue here (select “Zoning and Business Concerns,” “Zoning Concern,” “Short Term Rental,” complete the form and submit). An interactive map shows not only construction locations but also details on the projects, including the status, type, and even the project manager's phone number. While the map shows all planned projects, please note that it currently does not display repairs on water main breaks.

Driver licensing - REAL ID enforcement date extended to May 7, 2025

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the REAL ID Act enforcement date by two years offering Kentuckians, and residents of other states, more time to request a compliant driving or identity credential that maintains air travel access and military base entry. The enforcement date has been moved from May 3, 2023 to May 7, 2025. Read details on REAL ID.

Be informed about crimes with LMPD's crime mapping website

The Louisville Metro Police Department uses a Crime Mapping website to display crime on a map in Jefferson County. 

Zoom in to see crimes in an area, or put an address in the address bar at top left to search. You may sign up for auto email alerts for crime around an address. Reports are made available to the public after a process of internal review, often in the same day as the report taken. Due to the nature of some crimes, reports are made available to public upon the completion of a thorough investigation and will be made available as soon as practical.

Veterans Crisis Line 

Some offices and VA hospitals offer a "Health Promotion Disease Prevention Program" that includes treatment methods including acupuncture, tai chi, and meditation instead of opioids, and they work with the Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) to provide support and treatment for PTSD and depression, the leading cause of suicide for veterans.

"Embrace the Journey" website for parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents

For LGBTQ+ children and adolescents,a parent’s support makes all the difference. The Embrace the Journey website is designed to educate the parents of LGBTQ+ children and adolescents about how to give children the emotional support they need.

Please report non-working streetlights to LG&E.  Report a hazard on a state road or highway, such as non-working highway lighting or potholes.

Reporting potholes

Report litterers

Get directly involved in making Louisville a more litter-free community through the Report-A-Litterer program aimed at motorists who throw fast-food wrappers, cigarette butts, soda bottles or any type of litter out their car window.

Help stop wire theft along Kentucky's highways

• Report any information about wire thefts at Kentucky interchanges to the KYTC Office of
  Inspector General (OIG) Office at 502-330-7506. If your information leads to an arrest and conviction, you may be eligible for the $5,000 reward.
• Report active crimes or suspicious activity to local law enforcement.
• Report dark intersections to the KYTC Traffic Operations Center at 877-FOR-KYTC
