Councilman Update

Dear District 25 friends and neighbors,

Today marks the start of budget season for the Louisville Metro Council, as Mayor Greenberg delivered his budget address in our council meeting this evening. This begins a two-month long process of hearings and debate at the Metro Council until we vote on the final budget in late June. My goal is to successfully advocate for meaningful investments in our district and the South end as a whole. For too long, the South end has been left out. This budget presents an opportunity for us to bring more resources to the South end in the form of park improvements, greater resources for LMPD and suburban fire departments, roads, sidewalk projects, neighborhood lighting and cameras, and more. I look forward to participating in our upcoming budget discussions and fighting for our community.

Also, in Council today we voted on a few important items. I voted in favor of an ordinance introduced by Councilman Brent Ackerson to allocate American Rescue Plan (ARP) funds to a new headquarters and wellness center for LMPD. I believe this is a great first step towards supporting our men and women in blue and creating a department that invests in its officers and incentivizes more people to serve the community under LMPD. I also voted in favor of a resolution written by my friend, Councilman Jeff Hudson, supporting the creation of a voluntary Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training for LMPD officers in an effort to reduce the risk of officer and subject injuries. The Council passed both of these important pieces of legislation.

Finally, I am happy to report that we had a successful first "Coffee with Khalil" at Stomping Grounds Coffee. I was able to provide constituents with an update on what I've been working on in Council, and answer many questions. I plan on hosting another event like this in the near future, so stay tuned! As always, please feel free to reach out to me and my legislative assistants either by calling our office or emailing us with your questions and concerns.

Thank you,

Khalil Batshon
