IDL leases Payette Lakes lands to county
Star-News, 6-1-23
Public access to over 1,200 acres of state endowment land fronting Payette Lake could be preserved until 2025 under a lease signed last week by Valley County and the Idaho Department of Lands.
The lease applies to about 1,037 acres along the southern portion of Warren Wagon Road near McCall, as well as 165 acres along Eastside Drive south of Lucks Point.
The purpose of the lease is to protect water quality in Payette Lake and to maintain public access to the lands for camping, hiking, foraging, snowmobiling and other recreational activities.

Alter Your Wildfire Risk
Star-News 6-1-23
by Dustin Miller, IDL Director
We know the Smokey Bear saying by heart: Only you can prevent forest fires. But every year, nationally, around 80% of wildfires are caused by humans. That jumps to more than 90% of fires when you look at what the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) has responded to this year. It could be a thrown cigarette, a debris burning pile not carefully watched, a campfire left burning, dragging chains, or parking on dry grass. The list goes on.
There is no room for mistakes when looking to protect our communities and our natural resources from wildfire. The significant precipitation that we received this winter and spring has resulted in a lot of fine fuel growth, and as temperatures rise those fuels dry which increases the risk of wildfire.
The reminders to prevent wildfires are hard to miss, be it from IDL or our partner agencies. Among them: Make sure your fire is dead out. Don’t drag chains or drive vehicles on dry grass. Be careful when target shooting. Don’t use illegal fireworks. There are too many reminders to include here.

Recreational lease of public lands established around Payette Lake
BSU Public Radio, 5-31-23
Twelve hundred acres of land around Payette Lake have been leased through 2024 for recreational purposes by Valley County, in partnership with the advocacy group United Payette.
The County Commission unanimously approved the lease on May 22, for the Crestline Trail area on Eastside Drive and the Greengate area off Warren Wagon Road.
“They are the probably the most used for recreation, most viewed closest to the city of McCall on the east side of the lake and on the west side of the lake,” United Payette’s Jeff Mousseau said.
Those 1,200 acres were previously part of a proposed land swap with development company Trident denied by the State Land Board in 2021, which would have privatized 26 square miles of land around the lake.
United Payette’s donors are covering the $31,000 cost of the lease, which is non-exclusive. That means grazing and mineral recovery could still be allowed in those same areas, which remain under control and oversight by IDL.

Some of land in failed McCall land swap now being leased for public recreation
BoiseDev, 5-30-23
A portion of the land around Payette Lake that was once proposed to be swapped into the control of a private developer, has been leased to Valley County.
The county signed a deal with the Idaho Department of Lands for a two-year recreation lease on roughly 1.87 square miles of land, with a parcel on the west side of Payette Lake off Warren Wagon Rd., and another small parcel on the east side of the lake.
The idea came about after a community group, United Payette, sprouted up in opposition to a large-scale proposal that would have swapped unidentified timber lands in North Idaho for much of the land around Payette Lake. That company, Trident Holdings, was turned away by the Idaho Department of Lands. The group is suing the state over the decision, but took a year-long pause to see how recent elections turned out.

Investment firm proposed buying this state land near McCall. Now it has a recreation lease
Idaho Statesman, 5-30-23
Valley County has partnered with McCall-based conservation group United Payette to lease two popular parcels of state-owned land in an effort to ensure recreation is protected. The parcels are part of several Idaho Department of Lands-managed tracts that a Boise-based developer proposed privatizing in recent years.
United Payette announced the lease in a news release. It covers 1,200 acres across two parcels: the Crestline Trail area west of Payette Lake near Warren Wagon Road and the Greengate area east of the lake near Eastside Drive.
Jeff Mousseau, a McCall resident and member of United Payette’s steering committee, told the Idaho Statesman the conservation group helped arrange the lease between the county and the Department of Lands. The lease begins June 1 and expires Dec. 31, 2024.
