Mentors Needed, Apply Today!
Working at IDL is rewarding, exciting, and a provides all of us the opportunity to learn and grow in our careers.
Take a moment to think about our new team members. Can you remember how starting your new job at IDL felt? Was it overwhelming? Did you wonder how your position fit into a huge agency with a statewide presence?
Our mentoring program gets great reviews and helps introduce new employees to the agency as a whole. Our new teammates need a mentor like you!
According to a study by Randstad, a Dutch multinational human resources consulting firm, 49% of employees who participated in their mentoring program were less likely to leave the company.
Participating in a mentoring program can significantly reduce turnover for seasoned employees, too. Research by mentorcliQ found 83% of mentees and mentors reported their mentoring experience positively influenced their desire to stay with their company.
Please apply to be a mentor, share your knowledge, skills and wisdom. Make a difference!
Benefits to mentees include building connections with people you don't see every day and understanding the bigger picture of IDL and endowment lands. Maggie Maggied, HR Specialist, says the one of the most valuable experiences was this day in the field planting antelope bitterbrush and sagebrush on Danskin Mountain.
Cleanup Near Wendell
The Eastern Area - Jerome Office worked to cleanup endowment land near Wendell. A combination of shooting debris and general trash littered the land. Employees removed three pickup and trailer loads of garbage that included couches and 10 mattresses.
Safety is Everyone's Responsibility
IDL and our Safety Program are committed to providing a safe working environment for all employees. Within the Safety Program, there are different program components with specific roles. The information below is not all encompassing but will help you understand the roles and responsibilities of each component.
Who is Responsible for Safety?
Employees
- Every employee is considered a member of the safety effort. Involvement on the part of all employees is critical to the success of the safety effort and is a part of all employees’ workplace responsibility. Employees are encouraged to provide safety recommendations to the Safety Officer, a Safety Committee member, or your office Safety Coordinator.
Safety Officer
- The Safety Officer is a permanent position within IDL and is responsible for the overall Safety Program. In this role, Vikki Snider facilitates Safety Committee meetings, supports the Safety Coordinators, implements and reviews safety policies, facilitates workers' compensation claims, and investigates workplace injuries. The Safety Officer is also responsible for identifying health, safety, and security related issues and concerns, and communicating safety related concerns, messages, and trends to agency leadership and employees.
Safety Committee
- The Safety Committee has nine members, six of whom are rotating members from various offices and programs. Any permanent IDL employee is eligible to participate when an opening occurs. The committee meets monthly and is responsible for promoting a safe working environment by developing and implementing corrective actions that address identified health, safety and security related issues and concerns. Committee members recommend policies, procedures, and other requirements that enhance employee safety.
Safety Coordinators
- Every IDL office is required to appoint a Safety Coordinator. If an office is very large or has multiple levels or buildings, a Section Coordinator may be assigned to assist the Safety Coordinator. Safety Coordinators review and update their office Emergency Response Plan, track office and individual non-fire program trainings and drills, and conduct inspections of AED's, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits. Safety Coordinators are the point person for office specific safety concerns and communicate directly with the Safety Officer.

Although Closed Fire Season Ended for Most of Idaho, Closure Extended for SITPA
“Closed fire season” which is otherwise known as the five months of the year that burn permits are legally required in Idaho ended Thursday, October 20, for most of the state. IDL issues the burn permits are normally required May 10 through October 20 each year.
This year, due to continuing dry conditions coupled with higher-than-average daytime temperatures, fire managers extended closed fire season for the Southern Idaho Timber Protective Association (SITPA) until 11:59 pm MT on Sunday, October 30.
SITPA's forest protection coverage includes a broad swath of Valley and Adams counties covering areas around Cascade and McCall, and stretching from the Little Salmon River to south of Smiths Ferry. The district provides fire protection on more than 530,000 acres.
Idaho law requires any person planning to burn outside city limits within Idaho, including crop residue burning, to obtain a state burn permit during the closed period.
“Extending the closed fire season in our area is crucial for preventing late-season, unwanted human caused wildfires,” said Rich Stiles, SITPA’s Deputy Fire Warden. “Based on conditions, our fire managers will determine what types of permits will be issued, and residents are encouraged to call our office with questions.”
New Option for Promoting Important and Time Sensitive Information Online
This week, to help highlight the extension of closed fire season for the more than 530,000 acres protected by SITPA, IDL launched new popup messages on the agency's website.
This functionality had not previously been available.
Popups may be configured to link to any IDL webpage and can appear on any of our site's pages. However, the use of the new popup messages will be limited on the site's main homepage to ensure the user experience for our site visitors isn't degraded. However, the use on program-specific webpages will not be limited.
If your program needs an extra boost to ensure information reaches a wide audience, send your request to implement a popup message to webmaster@idl.idaho.gov.
