Valley: Payette L. quality, state lands linked
The Star-News, 10-20-22
Protecting state endowment lands around Payette Lake would also protect the lake’s water quality, Valley County commissioners told a panel of local officials on Monday.
“If you destroy the watershed, then you destroy the lake and it comes right on down to everybody,” Commission Chair Elt Hasbrouck told the group.
The meeting was attended by representatives from the City of McCall, United Payette, the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Payette Land Trust.
An auction held on Sept. 14 for Cougar Island in Payette Lake marked the first of many auctions recommended by an Idaho Department of Lands plan that could sell off nearly 400 acres of state land around the lake within 20 years.
Commissioners requested Monday’s meeting to talk about steps that can be taken to protect state lands before more auctions are held.

SITPA's forest protection coverage includes a broad swath of Valley and Adams counties covering areas around Cascade and McCall, and stretching from the Little Salmon River to south of Smiths Ferry. The district provides fire protection on more than 530,000 acres.

Idaho adds another easement to protect working timberlands
Associated Press, 10-19-22
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho Gov. Brad Little and other statewide elected officials have approved a northern Idaho conservation easement as part of a program that has protected from development about 156 square miles (400 square kilometers) of private timberland.
The Republican governor and other Land Board members on Tuesday unanimously approved the deal giving Idaho the easement title to 166 acres (67 hectares) in northern Idaho under the federal Forest Legacy Program.
In return for the easement, the non-industrial family landowner, Hartland LLC, will receive a $275,000 payment. That money comes from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, a popular federal program that supports conservation and outdoor recreation projects across the country. The program is funded using royalties from offshore oil and gas drilling.
In all, the Idaho easements open 140 square miles (360 square kilometers) to the public in perpetuity for recreation, free of charge.
“We’re going to get a lot more of these,” Little said immediately after the Land Board meeting. “The timber industry likes it, the conservation community, the hunters like it. The community likes it because they don’t get that fractured — people selling a little piece of property here, a little piece of property there, and putting houses on it.”

F&G provides millions of acres of access for hunting
Idaho Press, 10-19-22
Hunting season is here, and a question commonly asked is “where can I go hunting?” There’s a lot of good answers to that question in Idaho, starting with nearly two-thirds of the state is public land, and most of it is open for hunting.
Idaho Fish and Game also provides more access for sportsmen and women. The department owns, manages and keeps open to the public about 370,000 acres at its wildlife management areas, and provides literally millions more acres through its various agreements and lease programs with various state and private lands.
Money for access comes from multiple Fish and Game funds, including Fish and Game’s access/depredation fee that requires a $5 surcharge for residents and a $10 surcharge for nonresidents when they buy their first annual license of the year.

Foundation receives 7,180-acre Eighteen Mile Ranch
Post Register, 10-18-22
Over the 50-year arc of the Idaho Foundation for Parks and Lands’ conservation work, history is repeating itself with the news that TR Shelby has donated the Eighteen Mile Ranch, east of Dubois, to the Foundation, in memory of his late wife, Emily Stone Shelby.
Inked on Sept. 21, 2022, the generous gift of land comes with the family’s wishes to preserve the 7,180-acre property as a working ranch while continuing to support more than 20 years of conservation work to restore grazing lands and enhance fish and wildlife habitat on the ranch, said Brian McDevitt, Foundation board member who signed the deal with TR Shelby.
“We are very excited and humbled to be receiving this wonderful gift from the Shelby family,” McDevitt said. “Since they’ve taken over the property, they’ve done a great job improving the grazing management and fish and wildlife habitat. We will continue that work in the future in coordination with the ranch manager.”
