Welcome to the Superior Sentinel!
Hello neighbors,
It’s 35 days until Election Day and ballots will be hitting our mailboxes soon. This election season, Superior voters will be voting on: (1) three candidates to serve on the Town’s Board of Trustees; (2) whether to approve our Home Rule Charter; and (3) whether to approve a sales tax increase to fund parks/pools/road projects.
As of the date of writing, we have 9,351 registered voters in Superior. We’re about evenly split between male (49.5%) and female (49.7%) voters. Most of us (53.7%) are unaffiliated. The remaining 33.5% are registered Democrats and 11.2% registered Republicans.
By age, we’re pretty evenly split. Young voters are understandably our smallest voting block, with only 3.9% of our voters between the ages of 18 and 19. However, 19.3% are 20-29 years old and 15.7% of Superior voters are between the ages of 30 and 39. We start to pick up in our 40s and 50s, with 17.5% of voters in their 40s and 20.4% of voters in their 50s. We then drop off with only 13.3% of voters in their 60s and 7.5% of voters ages 70 and up.
In Presidential Election years, Superior has extremely high voter turnout. In 2016, we averaged about 89% voter turnout. In 2020, we had over 90% turnout across Superior, which is really incredible.
I’m certain Superior will again have high turnout in this year’s Presidential election, but don’t forget to vote down ballot too. We’ve got a lot of important issues that will affect us locally so be sure to vote the entire ballot.
The Town has additional information on the Home Rule Charter election and the sales tax ballot question on its website.
In order to vote in Colorado, you must be: a U.S. citizen; a Colorado resident for at least 22 days before the election; and must not be serving a sentence of confinement or detention for a felony conviction. You also must be 18 years old on Election Day. Qualified residents may register to vote up to and including Election Day, however, in order to receive a ballot in the mail, the Boulder County Clerk & Recorder’s office must receive your voter registration no later than eight days before the election.
For more information, please visit the Town's elections webpage.
Respectfully, Mayor Mark Lacis

Help us shape Superior! Town launches engagement for comprehensive and transportation plans
What will Superior look like in 10 to 20 years? Can you imagine it? Would you like to be a part of creating it? We are beginning the process of getting key stakeholder input on updating our Comprehensive Plan and Transportation Plan.
Municipalities prepare for the future through a Comprehensive Plan, a guiding document for decision-makers and Town residents that includes a vision for what kind of place they want to be. It uses a framework of goals, strategies and actions in order to achieve this vision. It includes topics like land use, transportation, housing, economic vitality and community resiliency. Also included is a Future Land Use Map that more specifically identifies where and how Superior might change over time.
Likewise, the Transportation Master Plan will help guide the Town's transportation projects and policy over the coming months.
Over the next several months, you will have the opportunity to share your feedback through a series of in-person and digital engagements. The first digital engagements are available for your input using the button below.
At ShapeSuperior.com, you will find three ways to engage: A survey to help us understand the Town's biggest opportunities and challenges, an interactive map for you to let us know your favorite places in Superior, and a big-idea board for you to share your big ideas about the Superior Marketplace.
The survey closes Oct. 11, so act fast!
Please note: The Transportation Master Plan will have its own webpage and separate engagement opportunities coming soon!
Thanks for joining us in this journey. The engagement will last several months with both digital and in-person opportunities to share your input and feedback.
If you have any questions, please email planning@superiorcolorado.gov or call 303-499-3675 ext. 116.

Keep your best friends and others safe with a leash
In an effort to promote safety and accessibility in our community, the Town periodically provides information about code enforcement topics.
This month, the Town would like to remind residents of Sec. 7-2-40 of Superior's Municipal Code which requires dog owners to keep dogs on leashes when outside the owner's premises or not on private property with the permission of the property owner.
Keeping dogs close to you when walking outdoors or enjoying one of our many parks is the best way to keep your dog and other people in the area safe.

Help kids ride smart: The importance of e-bike safety
E-bikes are becoming increasingly popular, especially among young riders. They provide a fast and convenient mode of transportation. However, e-bikes can reach higher speeds than conventional bikes and require more operating skills.
It's essential for parents to educate their children about e-bike safety. By ensuring that children understand the fundamentals—such as wearing helmets, obeying traffic laws and staying alert to their surroundings—parents can instill confidence in young riders and help prevent accidents.
Not sure where to begin? Check out this recent e-bike safety email from Boulder County – it’s packed with helpful links and resources on e-bike safety and stay tuned for more information from the Town.

Public Works
Rock Creek Parkway 2024 work is complete!
This year's construction along Rock Creek Parkway (RCP) from the pedestrian bridge near McCaslin Boulevard to Indiana Street has officially concluded.
This project included restriping RCP from McCaslin Boulevard to Coalton Road to reduce traffic speeds and improve bike and pedestrian safety.
The next phase of the project will start in the spring of 2025 with the reconstruction of the roadway from McCaslin Boulevard to the pedestrian bridge just east of McCaslin. This project will include roadway reconstruction and drainage improvements.
Unfortunately, the team could not complete work on this area of RCP in 2024 because it is connected to a $1 million grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation to rehabilitate the existing pedestrian bridge under RCP.
To learn more about ongoing capital improvement projects, please visit the Town's Public Works projects webpage.
