Welcome to the Superior Sentinel!
Hey Superior,
During these hot summer months, it sure is nice to have our two community pools. Our pools are extremely popular with residents. They offer a place to exercise, take swim lessons, cool off, have fun and gather as a community.
With eight lap lanes, the North Pool serves as the home of our local swim team, the Rock Creek Flyers (where many Superior kids ages 5-18 have learned to become excellent, competitive swimmers). The South Pool has a slide and two lap lanes. Both pools have kiddie pools for our littlest residents.
Unfortunately, the pools need a lot of work. Heaters and pumps have failed; leaks have formed; and concrete has crumbled. Over the past few summers, both pools have had to close multiple times during the summer months because something broke, failed, or otherwise wasn’t safe for the public. We also replastered the South Pool this spring to try and buy some additional time... and we all know how that’s worked out. A large hole has formed in the North Pool as well, which has been temporarily patched.
Both pools were constructed back in the 1990s when the Rock Creek Ranch subdivision was built by Richmond Homes, and like much of the infrastructure installed by Richmond back in the 90s (ahem, Rock Creek Parkway), they’ve reached the end of their useful lives and need to be replaced.
We’ve had our pools and a number of major road projects on our Capital Improvement Project list for several years, but with the Marshall Fire, we’ve had to reallocate funds and priorities to help our town recover from the fire. In the interim, we’ve been putting a lot of band aids on our pools — but we’ve run out of band aids (seriously, the South Pool has literally run out of band aids for bloody toes this summer) and it’s time to fix our pools for good.
This November, we’ll be asking the voters to approve a sales tax measure that, if passed, could provide funding for our pools. Preliminary estimates to reconstruct the North and South Pools are in the $10-12 million range and I’m hopeful that our community will see the value in investing in these popular community amenities so they can continue to serve Superior well into the future.
Respectfully, Mayor Mark Lacis

Town launches interactive dashboard for Sustainability Action Plan
In 2022, the Town of Superior approved its first Sustainability Action Plan to curb the impacts of climate change and other negative impacts to our health and environment, as well as help our community adapt to the changes we are already experiencing.
We have made great progress towards our goals in the last two years, and we are proud to share a new, interactive Sustainability Action Plan Dashboard that presents status updates on the 100+ actions, key performance indicators and goals laid out in the plan.
This easy-to-use dashboard will provide transparency on the Town’s progress to date, and will be a place to share sustainability successes and demonstrate our commitment to achieving our goals. The dashboard also highlights where work and investment are still needed.
Thank you for being part of our sustainability journey as we take action on climate change, increase community resilience, invest in a greener economy and ensure an equitable opportunity to thrive for all residents.
The first draft of the Strategic Housing Plan is ready for review. Just a few more days to provide feedback!
Over the past year, the Town has worked hard to understand housing issues, and the first draft of the Strategic Housing Plan is ready for your review!
To get us to this stage, we've offered multiple surveys, conducted a Housing Needs Assessment, held open houses to hear from residents and answer questions, and conducted interviews with housing professionals. This is described in the Summary of Public Outreach and Engagement. All of these efforts helped inform the Town's first Strategic Housing Plan. In the coming years, funds will become available through Boulder County and the State of Colorado to support potential housing efforts. This plan will help guide future decision-making and programs related to housing in Superior.
The plan is centered around three objectives:
- Increase Housing Choices for People
- Support and Promote Local and Regional Affordable Housing Efforts
- Remove Housing Barriers for Those Who Often Encounter Them
We now invite you to review the first draft of the Strategic Housing Plan, and then, please share your feedback, suggestions, thoughts and opinions. You can do so through the end of day on July 3.
Use the button below to visit the community engagement webpage. Thank you.

Work to move utility lines underground is progressing
The utility undergrounding work in Original Town is progressing.
Xcel Energy's work to move utility lines underground is complete, while Comcast's work is ongoing.
Comcast has installed the main fiber lines and is currently working to switch over customers' overhead services to underground services. The company estimates that this work will conclude in early July.
After completion, the above-ground poles will be removed, though a few will remain as some residents chose not to underground their existing overhead power services.
Lumen has not provided design plans or a schedule for its new installations in Original Town, but the Lumen work will not prevent the existing poles from being removed.

Reminder from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office: Most fireworks are illegal!
A message from Sergeant David Salaman with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office:
With the Fourth of July coming up, I thought I would remind everyone how dangerous fireworks are. There are approximately 15,000 people treated from fireworks injuries each year. On top of injuries, there is always the risk of fire. As we all know, fire danger is near and dear to our hearts.
Questions come up every year about what types of fireworks are allowed in the Town of Superior. Any fireworks that explode or leave the ground are illegal. This limits the legal fireworks to sparklers, fountains and similar devices. As always, please be careful and aware of where the hot embers are going. An adult should always closely supervise all children.
Please review this PDF to learn more about what's allowed in Boulder County.
There will be a sanctioned fireworks show in Louisville, so Boulder County Animal Protection Supervisor Janeé Boswell provided some expert-approved tips to keep your furry friends calm and secure:
- Keep your dog inside
- Create a safe haven away from windows with familiar toys and treats
- Play white noise
- Ensure your pet's collar information is up-to-date in case they escape
Have a safe holiday!
