As of February 3, 2022, City Council appointed Joe Lillio as the acting city manager. With more than 20 years of finance experience in the public and private sectors, Mr. Lillio takes the lead in strategic financial planning, budgeting and financial management while maintaining organizational efficiency and effectiveness. El Segundo Honors Black History Month
At the February 1st City Council meeting, Mayor Drew Boyles and the El Segundo City Councilmembers proclaimed February Black History Month. The proclamation urges all citizens to join together in making this a period of rededication to the principles of justice and equality for all people. Black History Month provides an opportunity to become more knowledgeable about black heritage and honor the many black leaders who have contributed to the progress of our nation.

Housing Element Update
El Segundo City Council approved the Housing Element Update at the February 1, 2022 council meeting. Updating the Housing Element of the City’s General Plan ensures the City is prepared to meet future housing needs. Under State law, every city and county is required to update its Housing Element to address specific requirements and submit the updated Housing Element to the State Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD). Meet the New Fire Marshal
Meet Nicole Pesqueira, the new fire marshal for the City of El Segundo! Pesqueira is responsible for managing the El Segundo Fire Department's Fire Prevention Bureau. She joined the City in January 2022 and replaces long-time Fire Marshal James Carver.
Most recently, Pesqueira served with the Brea Fire Department as a Fire Prevention Specialist II, where she spent the last six years. She is a registered instructor with the Office of the State Fire Marshal and teaches inspector courses throughout California. She’s currently the Secretary for the Southern California Fire Prevention Officer’s Executive Board and Fire Service Education Committee Co-chair. She teaches fire technology courses at Santa Ana College and likes volunteering with dog rescues in her free time. Read her full bio here.

Fired Up! - Girls' Empowerment Camp
The El Segundo Fire and Community Services Departments have teamed up to offer this empowering and educational experience for girls within the local community. The “Fired Up!” Girls’ Empowerment Camp will be held on March 26th- 27th, and will give girls the opportunity to get hands-on experience with real firefighting gear, as they learn what it’s like to be a firefighter.
This two-day camp is open for girls aged 12-19, and the cost per attendee is $25. Registration for residents will open on March 1st and March 8th for non-residents. Visit esrec.org to register, and for more information, call (310) 524-2362.

The DEI Committee recently presented reports to El Segundo City Council, including the Citywide Organization Report and the Public Safety Report. Subcommittees evaluated several opportunities to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts within the City of El Segundo organization and efforts as it relates to public safety. Meet the New Police Chief

Business Spotlight: Little Sister
A new Vietnamese restaurant has landed at The Point! Taking over the space previously occupied by Superba, Little Sister serves a menu inspired by "the spices and flavors of Southeast Asia with French techniques and Dutch and British colonial influences."

Resident and Business Surveys
Keep an eye out for the 2022 NetPromoter survey to the resident and business communities. This survey helps the City measure effectiveness and receive feedback. This year, the survey will be administered via the City's new survey program, Qualtrics, and sent in February. To receive this year's survey, sign up here.
Los Angeles Chargers Coming to El Segundo
#BOLTUP! El Segundo will be the new home to the Los Angeles Chargers. City Council recently approved plans to build the team’s new headquarters and state-of-the-art training facility. Construction is slated to begin this year and is expected to be completed in 2024 for the NFL season. El Segundo is the only city in the U.S. home to headquarters and training facilities for NBA, NFL, and NHL teams!

The welcome gateway sign for the City of El Segundo located at Imperial Avenue and Main Street was retired and removed this past December. The sign welcomed residents and visitors for more than 50 years. It was refreshed in 1992 for the City’s 75th anniversary.
The City is collaborating with a landscape architect to design a new gateway feature that will reflect the rich history and character of El Segundo while creating a vibrant and dynamic entry to the community.

Free Paper Shredding, E-Waste Collection & Mulch Distribution Event
The City of El Segundo and EDCO are sponsoring a FREE shredding event on Saturday, February 26, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at El Segundo Public Works, 150 Illinois Street. There will be certified shredding trucks on city premises during the event, and all items will be shredded ONSITE! Limited to two bankers boxes (10”x12”x15”) per household.
Unwanted electronics will also be collected, including TVs, computer monitors, printers, fax machines, VCRs, DVD players, cell phones, and answering machines. However, household hazardous waste (HHW) material, including paint, will not be accepted. Also available will be free mulch (while supplies last). This is a self-serve, self-loading, and self-haul service, so please bring your own cans/bags, gloves, and shovel—limit of 3 cans/bags per vehicle. If you plan to haul your mulch in an open truck or trailer, please remember to bring a tarp to cover your material. The event is for El Segundo residents only. If you like fancy dress, costumes and tea, you don't want to miss out on all the fun of the Tiny Tot Valentine's Tea Party, or bring your picnic blanket and join us for Storytime in Library Park! Park Place Expansion

Grand Ave. Main Replacement
The Grand Avenue Water Replacement Project begins this month. It includes replacing the water main and water services on Grand Avenue between the Pacific Coast Highway and Center Street and grind and overlay in the project area. The project is expected to be completed in May.
