This week, I want to take a moment to recognize the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month (Mes de Herencia Hispana), which runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.
At our Sept. 2 City Council meeting, we officially acknowledged this month of celebration, honoring the history, culture and contributions of Latin-American people.
Last Saturday, we celebrated the very first annual Hispanic Heritage Month event. Please enjoy this photo of Supervisor Belia Ramos, myself, Vice Mayor Joseph, Councilmember Brando Cruz, Sheriff Oscar Ortiz celebrating with event coordinators Karina Servente, Hector Valencia, Vanessa Lara and “Los Diablitos” from the event.

American Canyon’s story has always been shaped by the people who’ve come here from many different places. Our city’s strength comes from that diversity, and our growing Latino community is a vital part of it. Families, businesses and community leaders with Hispanic heritage help shape our schools, neighborhoods and local economy every day.
Their influence is rooted in essential values like family, hard work, education, culture and service. These values greatly enrich our community and help make American Canyon the place we’re proud to call home.
I’m grateful to celebrate Hispanic Heritage month alongside our community, today and well into the future.
Together in service, Mayor Pierre Washington
