As temperatures continue to rise across Southern Arizona, it’s important that we all take the dangers of extreme heat seriously. Pima County continues to experience longer heat seasons, earlier triple-digit temperatures, and an increase in heat-related illnesses and deaths. Extreme heat is not just uncomfortable; it’s a serious public health issue.
Pima County’s Beat the Heat program helps connect residents with cooling centers, hydration stations, respite locations, transportation resources, and important heat safety information throughout the summer months. Through partnerships with local governments, non-profits, libraries, and community organizations, residents across the county can access safe places to cool down and receive water and supplies.
In addition to emergency relief services, Pima County continues working year-round on long-term strategies to address extreme heat impacts through public health outreach, community partnerships, and education efforts. Heat affects every part of our community, from public health and emergency response to outdoor workers, pets, infrastructure, and quality of life. Programs like Beat the Heat are critical to helping save lives during Arizona’s hottest months.
This program is especially important for seniors, children, outdoor workers, and individuals experiencing homelessness, who are among the most vulnerable during extreme heat events. As we head into another Arizona summer, please remember to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and check on neighbors, friends, and loved ones.
