Good morning,
On Tuesday, November 18th, the Pima County Board of Supervisors and the Tucson City Council came together for a joint public session to focus on two of our community’s most urgent challenges: unsheltered homelessness and rising public drug use.
After brief opening remarks from Mayor Romero and me, we moved quickly into a series of staff presentations outlining the current work underway in both jurisdictions. The message was clear: Pima County and the City of Tucson are investing significant time, resources, and expertise into efforts that are making a difference. It was equally clear that by strengthening partnerships, reducing redundancies, and identifying the opportunities that still remain, we can make our efforts even more effective.
The conversation that followed offered council members and my colleagues on the Board an opportunity to share their perspectives, concerns, and ideas. It was a robust discussion--thoughtful, candid, and full of constructive energy.
As Chair of the Board and your representative for District 1, I walked into this meeting with one priority: to move beyond past tensions and build real momentum toward solutions for the challenges our neighborhoods experience every day. This meeting opened a pathway toward aligning city and county strategies; sharing data, coordinating outreach, streamlining services, and ensuring the programs that exist on paper translate into visible improvements on our streets.
While no final action plan was adopted, the tone of the meeting reflected a shared commitment to progress with a genuine “we’re in this together” mindset. And I couldn’t be more encouraged and look forward to our quarterly joint meetings marking an important step forward in regional collaboration.
As I shared in my November 18th Press Release, the wisdom of this African proverb remains our guide: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
