Good morning,
There are currently two major changes in our political landscape happening in Pima County. The rules governing each vacancy are different and can be a bit confusing so I thought it would be good to talk about them. State, local and Federal laws all come into play.
On Tuesday, Pima County Vice Chair Adelita Grijalva submitted her resignation from the board. It was a true pleasure working alongside such a strong leader who gave voice to so many in her district and throughout our community. Supervisor Grijalva's last day will be April 4th. She will be missed.
Below are the steps the Pima County Board of Supervisors will follow in filling Supervisor Grijalva's seat and also the steps in filling the Congressional seat left vacant by the passing of Congressman Raul Grijalva.
As always, feel free to call my office with any questions you may have regarding these or any other issues.

 Appointing a District 5 Supervisor
- The Board of Supervisors will appoint a new District 5 supervisor who will serve through 2026
- Voters will have an opportunity to select a candidate in the 2026 Mid-Term Election cycle to complete the balance of the term
- Clerk of the Board Notice
- Applications will be accepted by the Clerk of the Board through April 7th
- Applications must include: Letter of interest, resume, financial disclosure and conflict of interest form
- Board members will review applications April 7th-11th
- Board members will select an applicant at the April 15th BOS meeting
- In the result of a tie, the Clerk of the Board will have the deciding vote
- All applicants must reside in the District 5 boundaries, must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter literate in English, and a Democrat, which is the party registration of Supervisor Grijalva
Questions were raised about the reason for the expediency in choosing a new Supervisor. There is no doubt, the turnaround time is quick, but Supervisor Grijalva voiced concerns about leaving her district unrepresented, especially during budget season. Her fellow board members understood her concerns and voted on the timeline presented.
