Grijalva resigns from Board; applications to replace her due April 7

PIMA COUNTY, April 1, 2025 – The Pima County Board of Supervisors at its April 1 meeting unanimously accepted the resignation of Board Vice Chair and District 5 Supervisor Adelita Grijalva and set April 7 as the deadline for people interested in appointment to her seat to apply. Grijalva resigned to seek election to her father’s Congressional District 7 seat in a special election to be held later this summer. U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva died from complications related to lung cancer in March.

State law allows county boards of supervisors to fill vacant positions by a vote of the boards and also allows clerks of the boards to vote to break ties. Whomever the Board appoints will serve until the end of 2026. The County will conduct a special election in 2026, and voters will select a candidate to complete the balance of the term, which ends in December 2028.

The Board set the following timeline for applicants:

  • April 7: Applications due. Applications require a letter of interest, a resume, and completed financial disclosure and conflict of interest forms.
  • April 7-11: Review of applications by Board members
  • April 15: Board selects an applicant to complete the term at its regular meeting

A public forum with the applicants may be organized but was not certain at the time of the Board’s action April 1.

District 5 is mostly within the boundaries of the city of Tucson, including much of the west south and southwest sides, downtown, and central Tucson. Applicants by law must live within the district boundaries and must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter literate in English, and a Democrat, which is the party registration of Grijalva.

Applicants can email their applications to the Clerk of Board at COB_Mail@pima.gov, or mail or drop them off at 33 N. Stone Ave., Tucson, AZ 85701. Applications must be in by 5 p.m. April 7.

Grijalva was elected to the Board in 2020 and reelected in 2024.
