Although the areas above are a good start, I also want to be clear on the areas I think we need to improve on:

• There is $8M dedicated to a downtown development fund. I want downtown to succeed but I am also not for over focusing there at the detriment of the areas outside the Watterson and Gene Snyder which are the growth areas of the city.
• There is a focus on more park funding but it still seems it is going largely to parks that have been well funded and not to parks in the suburban areas of the city. I would like to see that more balanced.
• Even though this is the highest initial road improvement funding we have seen, it is still not enough and I will look to increase the funding of infrastructure needs.
• Finally, I support paying competitive salaries for our employees BUT I have asked for an analysis to ensure that increase wage growth will not create future budget deficits that may create pressure to increase taxes. We must not pass a budget that sets us up for failure.

My ordinance increasing oversight of our collective bargaining agreements passed unanimously at council.  I appreciate my colleagues support of this commonsense measure to ensure we have the appropriate level of executive branch oversight of union contracts.  We also debated an effort to fully fund our LMPD headquarters and create a wellness center for our first responders.  I completely supported this and it passed 20 for and 5 against.  We can’t expect to have the best police department if we don’t provide them the right facilities and equipment to do their jobs.

Finally, I am pleased to report that the crosswalk on Old Shelbyville Road is completed creating a safer way for our Eastern High School and Hite Elementary students to cross the street if they want to use our Middletown branch public library.  This is just another step in keeping our District one of the safest and most family friendly areas of the city. 

Again, I hope everyone enjoys the weekend and maybe even wins a few bucks (don’t ask me to handicap anything…I just make donations to Churchill Downs and enjoy the scenery).
