May The 4th Be With You and Happy Derby Weekend!

May 4th, 2023

First of all, I hope everyone has a safe and fun weekend.  We are such a unique city in that we have a ‘Superbowl’ level event every year when all eyes are on Louisville KY.  This is our time to shine as a city and I hope many people who are visiting not only have a great time but consider our city, like I did, as a perfect place to work and raise a family.

The biggest news within Council is the initial budget proposal that the Mayor provided to Council this past Thursday.  In the council press conference afterward, I stated that it was the best initial budget I had seen in my 5 years in office.  Now, to be clear, that is because the last 4 proposed budgets were terrible and required significant rework by council or they didn’t focus on the right things.  In other words, the bar was set very low.

Let me highlight the things I do like in this budget and then I will touch on a few areas of improvement that I will advocate for.  I do support the following:

  • The budget clearly leads with a public safety focus. This budget fully funds LMPD including an expectation to hire more officers.
  • It creates a department focused on the Gun Violence Initiative (GVI) program and seeks to hire a true expert to run it.
  • LMPD will also get funding for new ballistic protective gear, for an enhance recruiting program, and more license plate readers.
  • It starts with the highest level of initial funding for road and sidewalk paving at $30M.
  • He proposes hiring engineers and project managers to deploy over $100M in federal road projects that were stagnant including many projects that impact areas outside the Watterson Expressway.
  • Compensation adjustments so city jobs are more competitive in the marketplace.
  • Increased economic development initiatives and focusing on grant writing to bring more resources to Louisville.
