September 2025 Recap: Highlighted Updates from SBE |
|
|
Welcome to the September edition of the SBE Round-Up!
Here's a recap of some things the Board has been up to this month:
The Board’s FutureReady Initiative has completed Phase I and is now entering Phase II. Phase I focused on creating a vision for how Washington’s high school diploma should prepare students for a changing world and identifying gaps in the current system. Phase II will build on this work by developing concrete recommendations to address those gaps and update graduation requirements.
During Phase II, the Board and FutureReady Task Force will explore a wide range of topics, with a focus on tackling big-picture questions like:
- What knowledge and skills do all students need to succeed in a changing world?
- How can those fit into a limited set of requirements?
-
What balance of consistency and flexibility will best serve student needs and interests?
Some issues require more time or subject-matter expertise, so the Board is setting up subcommittees to take a closer look. These subcommittees include:
- Implementation Supports
- Educator Development & Student Learning Experience
- Financial Education & Life Skills
- Technology, Computer Science, and Media Literacy
- Math
The Board expects to release draft recommendations for public input in early 2026 with a legislative proposal anticipated for the 2027 session.

We are pleased to announce that Abby Wu, a senior at Pullman High School in the Pullman School District, has been selected to serve as the Board’s next student Board member.
“I decided to apply because I wanted to make sure students, especially those from rural or otherwise isolated areas, have their voices heard across the state,” Abby said. “I really want to work on and advocate for systems that are shaped around student opinion and student voice, rather than convenience.”
At school, Abby is a competitive varsity swimmer and a Running Start student with a passion for digital media and video production. She often helps operate her school’s livestream and sports production programs. Outside of her academic pursuits, she enjoys reading, exploring nature, and practicing portrait photography.
Before joining the Board, Abby established herself as an accomplished student leader. She currently serves as a Washington Youth Alliance Chapter Leader and a member of the Association of Washington Student Leaders. In these roles, she has been a vocal advocate for students across the state, and she is excited to bring that same advocacy to her work with the Board.
Abby is filling the position left vacant by previous student member Alex Henriksson, who graduated a year early. Board policy stipulates that the vacancy must be filled by a student from the same grade level, with preference given to finalists from the original selection process. Abby will serve the remainder of the term, which is set to expire in June 2026.

Each year, the Board is tasked with certifying school districts are in compliance with the Program of Basic Education (RCW 28A.150.220). The certification process occurs through an annual Minimum Basic Education Requirement survey completed by school district staff in advance of the school year under consideration. This report highlights key findings from that survey. |
