What Happened at the Special Board Meeting?
On January 11, the Board approved a proposed rule change that would allow a district to waive the pathway requirement, based on individual student circumstances, for students graduating in 2024. This change is intended to strike a balance between concerns about readiness for post-secondary success and challenges faced by individual students in meeting all the requirements following the disruptions caused by the pandemic. If the final rule is adopted by the Board in April, the change would allow a district to waive the pathway requirement in ELA or Math for a student graduating in 2024, provided that the district has not also waived a core course requirement in the same subject for that student.
Timeline for rule adoption:
- January 11— Approval of proposed rule
- March 13, 2024, 12:30-2:30— Public hearing (see the SBE Rulemaking page for connection information)
- April 10-11 Board Meeting— Adoption of final rules

For the last school visit of 2023, Snorkels the State Board's stuffed seal and communications tool, spent their birthday celebration in Kent. The celebration was thanks to one of two winners of last year's coloring contest: Kalei'i, a student at Kent Elementary.
We use both our stuffed seal, Snorkels, and the coloring sheets to hear from little learners about what they love in Washington schools.
Thank you to the district leadership for welcoming us warmly into such a wonderful learning space for small kids. There were songs, colorful party hats, and a lot of excited, energetic kids. The students talked with us about their love of reading and the latest lessons on blending letters to make words (so cool to hear!). Thank you for inspiring us! Watch a short video of our visit on SBE's YouTube channel.

It was an amazing 2023 - see why on our highlights message! The Board welcomed two teen interns, amped up community-engagement, and worked with the legislature to see HB 1308 pass (the performance-based graduation pathway option).
