The Alternative Learning Department has been collecting common questions related to ALE implementation as we start this unique school year. These questions and answers are available on the ALE website.
After receiving feedback from online learning programs and stakeholders, we have updated our guidance for Online School Program approvals during the 2020-21 school year.
If you have questions about online learning and approvals, please contact Nicole González.

In response to changes to the September count requirements and timelines for when students are required to be enrolled and demonstrate evidence of participation, OSPI will be requesting emergency rulemaking waivers for ALE and Open Doors programs.
SEPTEMBER P223
- Students can be claimed for state funding if they are both enrolled and participate in a course of study at least once during the month of September.
- Student participation in ALE means:
- participation in the development of the WSLP; or
- engagement in instructional activities.
- Districts should submit preliminary enrollment (P-223) data to OSPI no later than September 28. Revisions to that data to account for those students who participated for the first time after September 28 can be submitted in October.
OCTOBER P223
- For ALE programs, the weekly contact, progress review, and intervention plan requirements during the month of September are not required for the October P223.
-
This emergency rulemaking will apply to the October 2020 P223 only.
- All requirements for contact, progress review, and intervention plans must be documented per the requirements of Chapter 392-550 WAC beginning in October to claim students for state funding on the November P223.
Even though these requirements are waived for the month of September for the October P223, they remain a best practice and are useful tools to support students. All efforts should be made to continue these practices, especially for students who enrolled in early September.
For information on the requirements to claim enrollment, review the Guide to Offering ALE.
The 2021 ALE Administrator Meeting is scheduled for Thursday January 14.
The meeting will be held remotely via zoom and we are seeking input on the agenda.
- Please complete this 3-5 minute survey by Friday, October 2 to provide your input.
If you have questions about this survey or the event, contact the Alternative Learning Department at ALDInfo@k12.wa.us.
State Superintendent Chris Reykdal submitted his 2021–23 budget priorities to Governor Inslee and the Office of Financial Management on Friday September 18. View more information and an overview of the 2021-23 priorities here.
OSPI will offer competitive grant opportunities to community-based organizations (CBOs) to support student learning during the 2020–21 school year.
The CBO grants will be focused on supporting students and their families to engage in school-based learning, regardless of their school district’s reopening model.
