Braun

Senate Republican Leader John Braun, R-Centralia, on a new state audit that found widespread overpayments in childcare subsidies and raised serious concerns about oversight and accountability within the Department of Children, Youth and Families:

“The audit released March 30 ought to light a fire under those in charge of our state government. It was shocking to learn the agency sends money out to providers without first verifying whether a payment request is allowable, and that two-thirds of the payments reviewed were larger than they should have been. This kind of approach wouldn’t be tolerated in the private sector, but in state government, it’s taxpayer dollars on the line.

“Whether these results are due to indifference or incompetence, the public deserves answers. Instead of rushing to impose more taxes, there should be a stronger focus on proving that taxpayer-funded support is being handled responsibly and not being wasted or misused. The executive branch must do better.”
