Supporting Our Local Farms & Small Businesses This Summer and Beyond!
Dear Friend,
Our local farms and small businesses are essential contributors to our communities, making up the fabric of our downtowns, business districts and agricultural production district. We know that when we all support them it helps everyone thrive here in District 3 – and beyond!
In our recent supplemental budget, I allocated $44K to provide funding to our food banks for them to purchase produce, meat and dairy from our local farms, supporting our farmers and getting nutritious food to those in need.
Also, I’m excited to announce a King County pilot project, specific to District 3, that directly supports our farms! I secured $250K for the Snoqualmie Valley Preservation Alliance to administer this program that will enable local farms to purchase Agricultural Storage Coolers, ensuring the infrastructure needed to provide produce to food banks and other community partners during and beyond the growing season. We are really excited about this multi-benefit pilot project and will keep you posted on its success!
To encourage this work beyond this pilot program, I formally requested that the Executive complete a study to understand what ongoing, sustainable funding for food security exists in King County. Funding predictability is important for farm and organizational planning, and this knowledge will enable us to take critical steps to support our farmers, ensure everyone has access to fresh, local food, and strengthen relationships between farmers, food banks and food security organizations.
Thank you to our food banks and farmers who shared their challenges and brought forward these excellent ideas for us to consider implementing!
While we’re at it, remember that farmers markets are fantastic opportunities to support our local farmers and small businesses. Click this link to jump to a list of exciting events in our district, including all the amazing seasonal farmers markets throughout District 3!
As always, don’t hesitate to reach out at sarah.perry@kingcounty.gov or at 206-477-1003. I’d love to connect!
Sincerely,
Council Briefings, Actions & Recognitions!
Council continues to work hard for you! Here is some of this month’s work on the issues you’ve expressed, through our survey and meetings, that matter most to you:
-
Investing in our Road & Bridge Infrastructure: The King County Transportation District approved legislation to address a critical shortfall in funding for the 1500 miles of unincorporated roads and 194 bridges we rely on every day. The legislation will dedicate $100 million annually toward long-overdue investments in our road infrastructure, ensuring the safety of everyone on our roadways.
-
Safety & Emergency Preparedness in 2026 Supplemental Budget: The Council passed our 2026 supplemental budget, including $125K to Eastside Fire & Rescue and $400K to King County Search and Rescue for new emergency response equipment, restoring critical response capability following the December 2025 floods.
-
Food Security & Farms in 2026 Supplemental Budget: The 2026 supplemental budget includes $250K for Agricultural Storage Coolers, $44K for food banks to purchase from local farms, and $24K for food bank and food security organization capital needs in District 3, ensuring none of our neighbors go hungry.
-
Housing in 2026 Supplemental Budget: The Council set aside $10 million in contingency funds to offset potential reductions in federal housing funding, ensuring continuity and stability for residents who rely on our housing programs.
-
MLK Service Awards: I was honored to recognize Detective Ed Christian, King County’s Search and Rescue Coordinator, as our District 3 recipient of the Martin Luther King Jr. Medal of Distinguished Service! Detective Christian has helped thousands of individuals and families find their loved ones in critical situations and is widely respected for his expertise and leadership.
-
Juneteenth Proclamation: The Council proclaimed June 19 as Juneteenth in King County, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans in Texas on this day in 1865. Thank you to Sherry Williams and Eric Greer from the Northwest African American Museum for accepting this proclamation!
-
LGBTQ+ Pride Month Proclamation: The Council proclaimed June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month in King County. Thank you to Deputy Executive Director Jose Vazquez of Entre Hermanos for accepting this proclamation!

This month, I had a blast attending Duvall Days, Fall City Day, and Skykomish Tunnel Days, which showcased the unique spirit and character of these communities from the strong agriculture in Duvall and Fall City to the historic railroad past of Skykomish and more!
Muslim Association of Puget Sound Eid al-Adha Celebration at the End of May: Thank you to the Muslim Association of Puget Sound for inviting me to your Eid al-Adha Celebration! This gathering was such a beautiful display of joy, strength, and community, bringing together people from all walks of life for this holy day.
SnoValley Pride: It was wonderful to join SnoValley Pride for their annual Pride Picnic in Carnation! Every year, this event brings such joy and is a welcome reminder to everyone in the Snoqualmie Valley that you belong. It was also great to have Dave Upthegrove, our WA state Commissioner of Public Lands, there for opening comments. Happy Pride!
Pushing Boundaries: Thank you, Pushing Boundaries, for having me at your facility to see the amazing work you do in action! It was wonderful to witness how they’re using cutting-edge medical technology and the good, ol’ fashioned expertise and passion of their dedicated physical therapists to support people living with paralysis and improve their lives.
Clear Creek Farm: It was a pleasure to visit Clear Creek Farm and hear about their work from Liz and Yvonne! They run a gorgeous makerspace tucked in the forest south of the City of Duvall focusing on fiber arts like knitting and weaving. If you want to learn more about their work, drop by their booth at the Duvall Farmers Market on Thursday, July 30!
Community Celebrations
We wished a very Happy Father’s Day weekend to all of the Fathers, Stepfathers, Foster Fathers, Grandfathers, and Father Figures – with us or in spirit – throughout our community. Thank you for the love you give and receive!
Focusing on Your Priorities!
Here are more of the happenings at King County related to the things that you said mattered most to you in our annual survey:
Priority #1: Road & Bridge Infrastructure
Installation of Temporary Baring Bridge: As Roads plans for major repairs to the Baring Bridge following last December’s flooding, they’re installing a temporary bridge nearby to ensure safe and reliable access for residents. There are road and lane closures in the area with installation of the temporary bridge expected to be completed by the end of July!
Priority #2: Safe & Healthy Communities
Stay Safe in the Water This Summer: Last December’s historic flooding caused significance shifts in our rivers across King County, creating new potential drowning hazards. Stay safe on our beautiful rivers and lakes this summer by checking out these water safety resources from King County Public Health and LakeSafe Initiative!
Priority #3: Environment
Supporting Conservation Work: In our 2026 supplemental budget, I allocated $12K to the Issaquah Alps Trails Club to support their ongoing habitat restoration and conservation work along Squak Mountain, Big Tree Ridge Trailhead and other natural areas around Issaquah!
Priority #4: Housing – All Types & All Incomes
Health Through Housing: New data shows improved housing and health outcomes for people living in King County’s Health Through Housing buildings throughout last year. In 2024, this program served 1,281 people across Auburn, Burien, Renton, Redmond and Seattle.
Priority #5: Transit & Mobility
King County Metro Community Van: Did you know that you can book a Community Van for any purpose to get around your community and beyond? Metro’s Community Van program allows residents to book the van for trips within a 80 mi radius with a volunteer driver. The volunteer driver rides free and its standard Metro rates for all other passengers!
