On Saturday, February 7, King County crews and contractors responded to a sewer overflow near the intersection of North Mercer Way and Fortuna Drive. Crews stopped the overflow at 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, and the contractor has completed cleanup in the affected areas on North Mercer Way and on the I-90 Trail. Crews will also disinfect all impacted catch basins along Fortuna Drive, North Mercer Way, Southeast 35th Street, and Southeast 33rd Street.
North Mercer Way and the I-90 Trail at Fortuna Drive are back open to traffic. Other sections of the I-90 Trail remain closed for ongoing pipe repair work, unrelated to this incident. Please see our January notification for more information about this repair work.
Public health advisory
The King County Environmental Lab has been collecting water quality samples since the overflow was contained. Daily testing of samples from the nearby stormwater system will continue throughout this week.
Public Health – Seattle & King County advises the public to avoid contact with potentially contaminated water in the area until 1:15 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 15, or until the advisory is lifted. See map below to view the affected area.
On Sunday, WTD’s Community Services team notified nearby neighbors and posted beach closure signs at six public access locations shown on the map below.
