Sections of I-90 Trail on North Mercer Island to close for pipe repair work as early as January 21 |
|
Expect pedestrian and bike detours |
|
|
As early as January 21, crews will begin work on two sections of the I-90 Trail, one section near Shorewood Drive, and another section between Island Crest Way and 84th Avenue Southeast. Altogether, this work is expected to take up to three weeks to complete. This schedule is weather-dependent and may take longer.
Crews will use a construction method called open-cut trenching. During open-cut construction, crews sawcut the trail’s surface, remove asphalt, and dig down to the pipe. You may notice construction noise and vibrations during work hours.
Trail detour:
During this work, the pedestrian detour will be routed along a temporary gravel path while cyclists will be detoured to merge with traffic along N. Mercer Way and follow I-90 trail where routed (see map below). Please follow all detour signs and travel slowly around the work area. Certain portions of the trail may reopen dependent on areas that need repair.
Please follow marked detours and signs. Drivers should use extreme caution while moving through this area.

Why are pipe repairs needed?
Testing the pipe ensures the newly installed conveyance system operates as planned. Pipe testing revealed an issue that needs repairs. Crews are repairing the pipe to make sure the system operates correctly and safely to ensure reliable sewer service for your community.
Plans for final restoration:
When repairs are complete, crews will backfill the trail and temporarily restore the trail surface where the pipe was installed. Then, crews will restore all disturbed areas based on permit conditions agreed upon with the City of Mercer Island. Final paving is weather dependent and will take place during the next permitted paving window, which begins in the spring.
