*Local* FEMA "Advanced PIO" class
King County, Washington sent this bulletin at 07/12/2022 12:43 PM PDT
Hello!
Are you interested in attending FEMA’s ‘Advanced PIO’ course? King County Emergency Management will be hosting the course (with instructors from the Emergency Management Institute (EMI)!!) at our facility in Renton on August 22-26 and there are still seats available.
The Emergency Management Institute (EMI) Public Information Officer (PIO) training curriculum includes courses delivered at the awareness, basic, intermediate, Advanced and Master levels. The Advanced Public Information Officer Course teaches participants additional skills for use during escalating incidents, including strategic communications and incident action planning as it relates to Joint Information Center (JIC) operations.
See the attached flyer for more details.
There are *TWO* steps to Apply (you need to do -both-):
- Use Washington Emergency Management Division’s (EMD’s) registration site: https://reg.learningstream.com/reg/event_page.aspx?ek=0038-0021-4891a5b25eba427f843a3ecbc4364df9
- Use FEMA’s online application link: https://training.fema.gov/netc_online_admissions/ (This is necessary to receive your Certificate of Completion from the class.)
Note 1 - For the registration sites, you must attach the completion certificates from the prerequisite courses. (Are you still working on one or two of the Independent Study classes (they have an ‘IS-‘ prefix), but you can finish them before August 11th? Please send an email to eobrien@kingcounty.gov with the details on what you are working to complete, and I’ll see if we can get permission for you to register -now-.)
Note 2 - FEMA’s online application site can be a little complicated if you haven’t been through it before. When you get to the step shown on this graphic, make sure you do all -six- steps. (When you are completing the application, you may need to scroll down to see the last step):

Note 3 - When FEMA;s online application site asks for our Washington State’s ‘State Training Officer’ please list Stephanie Hakala ( stephanie.hakala@mil.wa.gov ). State Training Officers for other states can be found here: https://www.firstrespondertraining.gov/frts/statecontactshttps://www.firstrespondertraining.gov/frts/statecontacts
Since this course is in high demand, we want to make sure as many folks as possible can get into this course while we are hosting it. If you run into any difficulties while applying for this class, please reach out to me ( eobrien@kingcounty.gov ) and I’ll see what I can do to help you navigate through things.
Best regards,
Eric
